Question about Toshiba Satellite M115-S1061 Notebook

Negative Video My daughter's 2-yr old M115 laptop "suddenly" (her claim not mine) gone into some sort of a negative video on the LCD display. The display is dim to the point it first appeared to be a bad inverter but changing that produced no change. Colors are out of wack and producing some previously unseen shades. At one point I thought the LCD might have lost the its ability to produce certain colors most notably blue but after I modified some of the color slections I now realize it can reproduce blue when it wants to and that the there is some form of video inversion going on that is tough to describe for at times it isn't obvious at all. The video driver hasn't been updated and a search for an update indicates there is none newer thus I cannot go forward or backward in that regard. Ant external monitor produces normal results thus it is unlikely to be a video chipset issue. Thus far a search of the Internet turned up a single similar ut unresolved XP case though a MAC user indicated this was an operating mode he could actually select or disable with a certain keystroke combo but nobody seemed able to translate the MAC sequence into an XP equivalent to even see if his observations had any merit in a Windows world. Any assitance or suggestions are welcome as she is getting ready to return to school which means a new laptop if I can't get thisresolved timely... TIA Bob

Try this ,
1) Power On Display Setting (in TSETUP).
2) Display Panel Position upon power-up.
TheTSETUP options allow for internal, simultaneous and external. Thedisplay selection hotkey (Fn + F5) alternates between these modes inthis same order.
HOWEVER:
If the display panel is closed uponpower-up (long enough for the POST to complete) then the video outputis automatically routed to external. This happens even if the Power OnDisplay Option of TSETUP is set as INTERNAL.
Normally - this can beremedied by hitting the selection hotkey combination once, to toggle tointernal display if the panel was accidentally left down.
·UNLESS: Power On Password is enabled, in this case the password couldbe entered blind because the hotkey won't respond until security ispassed
· OR - turn off the computer and power on again with the display open.
If you want to try to update the driver: Please use this link..

Dear Sir,

This is the problem for not updating the video drivers of your laptop. I suggest to install the Belarc advisor from http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html and install it. It shows the detailed profile of your installed software and hardware, missing Microsoft hotfixes, anti-virus status, etc...... After installed it opened a webpage like html site and there is separate column of Main circuit Board details.
The details is to send me i will find the exact video drivers link for your laptop. ok. Once you have updated the drivers, hope it will be OK.

thanks
good luck

Hi,

How is the display before Windows XP loads, say during CMOS/BIOS configuration? If the colors are also way off, then possibly hardware, but if normal than Windows display configuration.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

I don't know what to tell you to check on this, but two other places to check for answers are www.cnet.com (the user forums) and www.expertsexchange.com - both have high-level technical knowledge available (as does this forum, but no one has yet replied) and may be able to help you out.

Negative Lcd Screen notebook

The LCD screen will need to be replaced, go to www.ebay.com type make and model of laptop, refine search to screen. But first hook external monitor to the video output, if picture is okay it is the above mentioned problem, now if both have the same symptom the video graphics chip is the issue.

Dim screen on HP. Any diagnostics I can run to isolate the problem?

The problem is in the inverter board, "located below the screen" or the backlight behind the LCD display is faulty. In most cases the inverter is the issue and replacement only option, "be aware that high voltage is present when running"

I can barely see the screen, its very dark. Its a toshiba satellite m115 s1061

Try attaching an external monitor to the laptop & see if you could get any display on it. If this is successful, then you might have either a faulty LCD cable or screen inverter board.
The LCD cable transfers data signal from the motherboard & video card to the LCD screen. It also supplies high voltage DC power to the screen inverter board. The screen inverter board works as a power supply for the backlight lamp mounted inside the LCD screen. It converts low voltage DC power to high voltage AC power needed for the backlight lamp.

LCD Screen colors are bad on toshiba Satellite M115-S3094

Was the screen showing all OK before you updated the driver? If so did you try backing out (uinstalling) the graphics driver? You mentioned gtaking screen cover off ... did you completely remove the screen from the laptop, including the wide connector at the top and the smaller one at the bottom, and the small one to the backlight? These connectors might be seated wrong, and you'll have to reseat them, mostly the big one at the top. Best o'luck, Moorethemerrier!

You could try a system restore to set the graphics back to normal. This would uninstall programs you installed since the restore date, but doesn't affect files and folders.

To run System Restore:

Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, then select System Restore. Choose a restore point before the problem occurred. It will take about 15 minutes, and hopefully your problem will be resolved.

Display problem

Well what i would do is get an external monitor and hook it up and see if you see video on it.
Sometimes the inverter might be bad or the bulb or just the monitor itself.
I wouldn't imagine you need to replace the whole laptop I would try each step and see if it's somthing that you want to do.
If the inverter is gone you can put a flashlight to the LCD and see everything in the background like shadows ect.
If the bulbs are gone can be the same thing with shadows ect.
If the LCD is bad you won't see anything and then it's upto you if you want to purchase another LCD which some people buy from ebay for around $100 give or take.
If it in fact is the motherboard you could buy it off of ebay they have alot of refurbished to new motherboards for affordable prices

Display Issue

Toshiba makes a great laptop but the display video or lcd seem to go bad very quickly I have replaced the lcd in many to solve this problem but be aware a few also had bad video cards (unlikley in your case as the external video is fine) it would seem as the lcd panel has gone bad on yours. the average replacment is around $100.00 to $300.00 depending on where you purchase from.
