I had a similar problem when I installed my DSL service. The problem I had was that the IP address for the modem and the wireless router ended in 0. i.e. 192.169.1.0. I had to chage the routers default IP to something line 192.168.1.10. Try this and see if it helps. You have to log onto your router without the modem connected to do this.

directly connect the dsl modem to your pc and then restart your system. once your up and running the pc should automatically create a connection with the modem device. once you have established an internet connewction this way, shut down the system and reboot. after complete bootup, unplug the power supply cords to both the modem and the router. now plug im the modem, wait 1 minute and plug in the router. after about a minute you should now be able to connect to the internet both by your pc and wireless connections.

If you're Bell sympatico is a wireless modem/router and your laptop has built in wireless on it you just need to connect to the wireless signal of the Bell sympatico then that should be the time you can access internet with the laptop, But if your Bell sympatico is only a plain DSL modem you need to get a wireless router that will share the internet to your laptop and desktop so you can roam in your house with your laptop here is a sample of wireless router Linksys WRT54G.

Hope that helps........

Troubleshooting DSL Modems

Ever look at your DSL Modem and wonder what all those lights mean? Why do some flash, while others remain solid? What if your lights are different colors? How do you tell if your DSL Modem is working correctly?<br /> <br /> Each light on your DSL Modem represents a function. The light is an indication of whether that function is working properly. Sometimes the placement and title of each function can vary by modem manufacturer, but they are pretty standard in interpetation. If you look closely your modem, you might find that each function is labeled in small print to help identify them.<br /> <br /> A standard DSL Modem has a light for power, internet, ethernet, link and wireless connection. A healthy DSL Modem will have a steady green light that does not blink or flutter for all features other than internet, ethernet and wireless. A flashing or fluttering light indicates movement and useage. When you are connected to your DSL Modem wireless, the light for this feature will blink indicating a connection and/or active useage. If the internet connection is working properly the color of the light will be green. If the connection is working but experincing a problem the light can turn to yellow or orange. If the connection fails, the light on the DSL Modem can be red or absent depending on the problem causing the trouble. If your service is turned off by the provider, more than likely the light will be "off".<br /> <br /> If your lights turn a different color, are absent or your internet connection fails try power cycling your modem before reporting the trouble to your provider. Power cycling helps the DSL Modem to reset its connection and repair your internet services.<br /> <br /> If you are using a DSL Modem alone to connect to the internet (no additional router) you can power cycle it by first turning off your computer and then unplug the modem itself from the power source at the wall. Wait for 1 to 2 minutes and then plug it back into the power source and wait for the warm up to finish before rebooting the pc.<br /> <br /> The DSL Modem should go through the normal warm up procedures of blinking lights, making them all stable and solid green ect. You will know when its finished warming up when the features are set at solid green (other than eithernet, internet and wireless connection as explained above). When the modem finished the warm up, reboot your computer and check your internet connection.<br /> <br /> Power cycling your DSL Modem can help keep your connection healthy and running at optimal speeds.<br />

Ethernet port not working. can i connect from my dsl by using a usb cable instead.

Yes, if your dsl modem is equipped with a usb option, you can hook it up to your computer but remember to remove the ethernet cord 1st. Both ethernet and usb cannot be connected at the same time. Once connected, your machine may search for a driver to install the modem via the usb port but it should work, especially if it's a westell. Best of luck.

Wireless internet

dear,
what about the modem. are u using a modem for dsl and then wireless router. if this is the condition, then u have to give different ip addresses to each. like 192.168.1.1 for modem and 192.168.0.1 or 0.2.......so on . then both will work and then configure the wireless after this. hope u understood what i mean to say. ask if further required or condition changes.

dont forget to rate it.

Please help

If you want to do this without a router (people actually do this? I like the hardware firewall) then you would need to have a second network card in the computer connecting to the modem (so one card connects to the modem and one to the second computer) and have the internet sharing capability turned on. I've never set it up so I'm afraid I can't be much more help, I just know a little bit about it.

Good luck :)

Connecting westell 6100 to linksys router wrt54g

First connect your computer to the WRT54G ONLY

1. Press the reset button on the back of the router for 15 seconds.
2. Power off the router. Wait for 10 seconds then power it back on.
3. Open the internet explorer browser ( page cannot be displayed will appear)
4. Click on the address bar and type in 192.168.1.1
5. It will ask for a username and password
6. Dont put anything in username and in password put in admin
7. In the middle of the first page you will see router or local IP
8. Change it from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.2.1
9. Click save settings.
10. Connect the Westell to the internet port of the linksys router.
11. Turn off then turn on the router after 10 seconds

17. Go to the setup tab. On the first drop down box change it to PPPoE from Automatic Configuration
18. Put in the username and password that you have for your internet provider. make sure that it is in the email format something like XXX@verizon.net or XXX@att.net or something like that.
19. Click save settings.
20. Go to the status tab then click connect.
21. Once connected internet should be working.

You can also call 18003267114 which is linksys support and have them help you

My computer keeps telling me I do not have an internet connection when I connect my router. I can unplugg the router and plug it back into my dsl modem and the internet again works. why won't my router...

More info would be helpful, but I am assuming that you have a router device that is not the DSL Modem, maybe a linksys, or something? Most likely what is happening is that the DSL modem is assigning private IP addresses, like 192.168.1.x, and the router is obtaining that IP address on its WAN interface, but is also configured for the LAN at 192.168.1.x, which is the same subnet, so it cannot route packets to the internet properly, as both interfaces have the same network range. Can you give me more info? I can try to walk you thru step by step.
Step 1. Verify current IP address when internet connection is working. (Go to a command prompt and type ipconfig, press enter, and document what your IP address is, also document the gateway address and subnet mask)
Step 2. Connect to the router instead of the DSL modem, do the same thing, document your IP address, gateway, and subnet mask
Step 3. Compare the two, your IP may be different, and the gateway may even be different, but see if both are trying to use the same IP range.

If they are the same, or close (the first 3 octets(set of numbers) are the same) then you will need to configure the lan side of either your DSL modem, or the router to be on a different IP address.

To do this will vary depending on the model of your router, so if you respond in the next few hours, I will still be online, and will try to assist.

I have a problem with my netgear routeer WGR614v7 since Thursday I have not been able to get a connection to my internet on my lab top with the this router can you help

If the router has defaulted to 192.168.1.1 and you are using dsl modem then you have a problem as dsl use the same IP address.

If you are not using dsl or if the default IP of the router is 192.168.0.1, then
  1. check to see if the uplink cables are attached between the router and the modem
  2. The wireless radio is turned on.
Under normal conditions if the unit "all of a sudden doesn't connect to the internet",
  1. turn off the modem
  2. turn off the router
  3. wait 15 seconds
  4. turn them back on.
