There is an inexpensive built in mic where you speak into the handset. Ifit is not clogged with any debris, the mic needs to be removed with a soldering iron and replaced with a like one from Radio Shack.

DCT 646

If you have a phone that works off a broadband modem, that is a VoIP phone. That will not work with a home phone line. I'm assuming Verizon is your local Telephone carrier that provides your local dial tone.
The broadband modem would have the phone number of whatever VoIP phone service you have.

Uniden powermax x 2.4 ghz lost call

If it's in warranty, I would send it back. It sounds like a problem with the built-in amplifier and possibly other components.
The squealing and echo is down to gain being too high, if you cannot set this on the phone, then it's a fixed value in the hardware. If you can, lower the gain. As for not being able to end the call, what about pressing the "c" button or the green button again?
