1996 Honda VF 750 C Magna Logo
Anonymous Posted on Jun 28, 2011

Hi, my description is lengthy, but I tried to provide as much detail as possible for troubleshooting. I'm seeking technical input re: a continuing carb issue w/my '96 Magna, which would not turn over at start up (after 5 mo. winter storage). Instead, fuel overflowed from the float bowls. We drained the float bowls, attempted to dislodge stuck floats by tapping bowls and tried restarting, which resulted w/fuel overflowing from right from carb again. Two years ago, in 2009 the carbs were pulled off, the jets and float needles were replaced, seats polished and air filter, plugs also replaced. Post carb service, I added Star Tron to the fuel. Subsequent start-ups were rough, but once running, performance was good. This spring, after failure to start, we pulled the carb bank out and had them disassembled and ultrasonically cleaned. Carbs were reassembled with new parts as needed: gaskets, o rings and choke plunger and bank was bench tested w/fuel, 1 hr - no leaks. Spark plugs were changed, the carb set was reinstalled, air box reassembled, hoses reconnected and bench test performed. Started on 4th-5th crank w/ 1/2 choke. Then the old fuel was drained from the gas tank, the petcock was removed, cleaned and reassembled and the tank reinstalled on the bike. Then, restarted w/no choke, idle rested at 1200-1500 rpm. Let sit it overnight. Next day, I added 1 gal of gas and started up w/ 1/2 choke, w/petcock in 'on' position but w/throttle, it lost compression and stalled. I repeated this step a couple of times w/same result. Finally it started and when I engaged 1st gear for a test ride, it stalled. So, I switched the petcock to 'reserve' and it started up immed. and rpms held at 1200-1500 and was steady w/giving it throttle. Took the bike for a loop around the block running on 'reserve' and it seemed to run just fine. My question is: why won't it maintain an idle and rev w/out stalling when the petcock is set to the 'on' position? This this still an issue related to the carbs? Is the petcock shot? Or is this another issue all together? Thank you for whatever input you can provide.

Reserve tube is usually set at a 1 gallon level in the tank, if you only added a gallon to an empty tank,I would fill the tank at least half full, If that doesn't fix the issue then replace the petcock, It's not a carb issue if it runs fine in reserve.

This makes sense, I hope it's that simple. There was probably a little more than 1 gal of gas in the tank, because we poured the remaining gas from a 2 gal gas can into the tank after bottle testing. However, I did consider that the fuel level was still not high enough to pull from the tank. Meanwhile, I called a local shop and the tech mentioned that the gas lines were possibly switched. Isn't there just one fuel line? Thank you.

Some bikes have 2 fuel lines that come out of the tank and go to a petcock that is mounted on the frame rather than inside the tank, but since the reserve tube is the lowest in the tank anyway, if you had them reversed it would run in the run position but not in reserve position once the fuel level had dropped below the run level tube height. I hope that makes sense

I understand what you are explaining, but to really comprehend it, this is where a visual would help. The schematics I'm finding don't really show the positioning of each line as they are connected to the gas tank.

You have a single line feed from the tank but I have include a link for a diagram

You can see it here just go to the middle of the page

Sound won't work

If your TV has a picture but no sound, start by checking the obvious such as whether the mute button is on or whether the volume has been turned all the way down.

Next check your cable connections and make sure everything is plugged in tightly.

Change channels to make sure that it's not a technical difficulty with your TV service provider or TV station. Call your service provider to see if they're experiencing issues with their audio.

Try reconnecting the HDMI cable after you turn off the TV.

Make sure your remote is on the correct input, and see if you have sound while playing a DVD or video game.

For a simple troubleshooting checklist, see No sound on TV and get more details on some simple fixes for this problem. I hope this helps!
