    rotten smell

  • rntootsie Oct 02, 2008

My dishwasher smells of rotten water a couple of days after running it. I emailed the company and got no response. I should have stuck to a Kenmore. I know all dishwashers do not have this smell. Mine has done this from day one.

Dishwasher continually smells. I read your solution "no water trap before you drain" and I don't understand what I should be looking for. Could you please elaborate?

Kitchenaid smells of rotten food but seems to be draining properly. Kill smell with strong bleach solution but comes back shortly after. Also my glasses have that musty dish rag smell after cleaning

There is nothing in a dishwasher construction to smell. typical sources of smell are:
plumbed into sink adjacent to a waste disposal unit
no water trap before you drain

I put my hands in stagnant water in garden up the smell was terrible after washing my hand several times i can still smell on my skin can this be harmful or absorbed through the skin

Most stagnet water will have a bad smell especially if it just sitting for a long time. Yes if you put your hands in it they will smell bad and most likely there will be no harm done. Get yourself nice smelly soap and wash with that and they will smell better. If i get gasoline on my hands I get myself some shaving lotion and pour a little on my hands and wash good afterwards.

Moldy smell in maytag washer

Check the drain. It SHOULD stand about as high as the washer, behind it, and it SHOULD have a trap below the floor (basement?).

If the drain's good and the trap is fine, then the pump could be borderline - it it doesn't pump all the water out, some water remaining in the washer may become stagnant and smell funky.

Tuscany kitchen faucet

The hose is always filled with water when not in use. The longer that water remains stagnant in that line, the more it will absorb that smell. Try running the water for 10-15 seconds before filling your glass. If that doesn't solve the problem, purchase a new hose.

Smelly water with water softener

Your local home depot sells a product called AFFRESH that is made for front loaders to clean mold as well as stagnant water smells from washing machines. I have also hear other techs suggest vinegar and water but personally I would much rather have the unit smelling nice and flowery smell instead of a vinegary smell. Also it is important to note your drain line should be at least 6" higher then the top of your washer if it were less then the water that is supposed to leave the machine goes back inside the machine thus giveing some a stagnant water smell or like bad eggs.If you have any further questions message me back
Thank you

There is a product sold at home depot that is called AFFRESH made for cleaning smells of stagnant water and other smells as well. They make two different kinds of this product one is for a dishwasher and comes in a yellow bag the other is for front load washers but can also be used on top load washers as well in a green bag. Basicly you use a tablet and run the dishwasher on its hottest setting. Unfortunatley I am unable to smell the smell that your smelling if it were a burnt wire smell then I would ask that you turn off the electrical breaker to the dishwasher whereas I have seen on LG units a couple years ago a type of black goey insulation that LG used to use as a form of insulation on the wires in between the the two panels for the door. Unfortunatley this type of insulation ended up corroding the wires and eventually makeing them short against the door of the unit. Also at least once per year you should also clean out the chopper area in your dishwasher this is the part of the dishwasher that shreds up any large debris or food particles in a dishwasher. It would really depend on if it smells like a stagnant water smell, a old food type smell, or an electrical type of smell. I very much reccommend using the AFFRESH though as even the toughest smells of mold or stagnant water can be alleviated with this product. Using two tablets usually remedies the smell. If you have any further questions message me back and please remember after our chat has fully concluded to rank how this opinion has helped in your appliance situation it allows me to continue helping others in similar situations in the future Thanks
Rick
p.s if you need a schematic showing the location of your chopper message me back the model number to your machine and I will locate your schematic

Odd odor coming out of dishwasher upon opening it. Smells like rotten milk. What is the best cleaning solution?

After a dishwasher is installed the hose rarely comes to mind - unless a problem occurs and a repair person comes out to inspect the job. If the hose was installed improperly, or if it is lying in a position that does not let it drain, stagnant water will create a bad smell. Examine the hose that is probably inside the kitchen cabinet beneath the sink. If the hose is lying in the bottom of the cabinet, it is probably full of water. A film begins to form inside the hose and the odor begins to grow. The next time the dishwasher is used, the stagnant water ends up on dishes, and in the meantime it can cause a bad smell inside of the dishwasher. Hang the hose at an angle on supports in the back of the cabinet. This alone might get rid of the bad smell inside the dishwasher.

Check the Seal

A dirty dishwasher seal can be a source of a bad smell. Before deciding the dishwasher needs to be replaced, check the seal - especially at the bottom. Old food and grime builds up in these areas and can cause a particularly bad smell. Clean it with a solution of diluted bleach and hot soapy water. One teaspoon of bleach for each quart of water is sufficient to kill germs and the odors they create.

NB I decided to add a little bit of vinegar to the machine after I unloaded it. Sure it would smell pretty strong for a while but then the smell would dissipate. Voila! For two weeks now my dishes have not smelled whatsoever.
