Check first audio properties, in control panel.

On windows the mic is disabled by default, you need to manually enable audio in, either from control panel, or from audio card mixer.

My speakers work but my mic does not. I cant see any hardware for my mic


Note that the microphone is not listed individually in Device Manager because it works through your sound card. Perform the steps in the following sections in order, and then test to determine if your issue is resolved after each section.

NOTE: The microphone should be selected as the recording device in the Volume Control tool(sndvol32.exe).

To verify this, follow these steps:
Click Start, and then click Run.
  1. In the Open box, type sndvol32.exe, and then click OK.
  2. Click Properties on the Options menu.
  3. In the Adjust volume for box, click Recording.
  4. Click OK.
  5. In the Microphone box, verify that the Select check box is selected.
All the properties listed on the Playback section of the Volume control are independet of the recording settings. So you could record through the microphone by selecting it on the recording section, and mute it on the playback section. Then, you could record sound, but wouldn't hear it through the speakers while you are recording. Check Your HardwareIf your microphone has never worked, or if it has stopped working, first check the physical connection of the microphone. Verify that it is firmly plugged into the microphone port instead of the headphone or speaker port. If you are not sure which port is correct, you can check the sound card to see if it is marked (sometimes with a picture of a microphone), you can use a process of elimination, check the documentation that came with your hardware, or contact the hardware manufacturer.   1. Run the Sound Recorder tool: Windows 95Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to Multimedia, and then click Sound Recorder. Windows 98Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to Entertainment, and then click Sound Recorder.
  2. After Sound Recorder is running, click Record (the circle on the right side), and then speak into the microphone. If it is plugged into the correct jack, the line on the display should move up and down. If it does not move, sound is not making it through your microphone. If the line does move, press Stop, press Rewind, and then press Play to listen to your recording. If this works, but it does not work in your program, view the "Using the Microphone in Programs" section in this article.
  3. Still Cannot Record
If you cannot record a .wav file after you follow the steps in the previous section, there may be a problem with your microphone property settings. To check these settings:
  1. Double-click the Speaker icon on the taskbar, and then verify that the Microphone slider is at the top and that the Mute check box is not selected. If Mute is selected, click to clear the check box.
  2. Select Properties from the Options Menu. Select Recording and click OK. Verify that theSelected check box under Microphone is checked, and that the Microphone slider is at the top.
  3. Try recording a .wav file again.

if you mean that your microphone is not working
control panel sounds and audio devices select advanced there might be a tick in the mute box untick it or select audio from the microphone drop down list make sure you have the right one selected and in the volume box make sure the microphone box has a tick in it or select the voice tab and make sure that you have the right media selected also select volume make sure the box for microphone has a tick in it

double clock at speaker at the left of toolbar then in options goto the properties go to recording option and confirm there that microphone is checked and then click ok
and then over there check the check box of microphone and increase the volume of microphone. hopefully it will work fine

Toshiba Satellite L45-S7409


First make sure your microphone is pluged into the right input (the Toshiba Satelite doesn't have a built in microphone) - then try these steps:
vistastartbutton.jpg To adjust the volume for your microphone in Windows Vista, follow these steps: 1. Click Startvistastartbutton.jpg, type mmsys.cpl in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER. 2. In the Sound dialog box, click the Recording tab. 3. Click Microphone, and then click Properties. Note Make sure that Working appears under Microphone. If Working does not appear, click Microphone, and then click Set Default. 4. Click the Custom tab. 5. Select or clear the Microphone – 20dB Boost check box. 6. Click the Levels tab. 7. Adjust the volume slider to the level that you want, and then click OK. 8. Click OK to close the Sound dialog box.

I am using a head microphone


No, depending on what version of windows you are using the microphone is muted by default in the sound properties dialog box.
Double click or right click your volume icon in the task bar area near the clock and go to sound mixer or properties and UNCHECK the mute microphone button. Then adjust the recording level accordingly using sound recorder or similar program.

Vista 64 microphone not working


hmmm did you try a different mic, and exure its jacked into the mic in of your sound card.. If you have dual sound devices, ensure its in the correct selected device...

1.)To see which device you have as the selected device, Click Start, All programs / accessories / entertainment, volume controll..

2.)Choose Options and then properties

3.)In the mixer device drop down list, ensure that the correct device is selected. Click on the drop down list to see all aviable devices..

4.) Now under the Adjust Volume For selection select recording

5.) In the Show Following Volume Controll Box, select Mic,(make sure its ticked)

6.) Click Ok

7.) The mic and aother controlls will show up, under mic ensure select is checked..

NOW TEST YOUR MIC..
1.)Start, All programs / accessories / entertainment / Sound Recorder
2.) Click Edit then Audio Properties
3.) Under Sound Recording Select the Appiorate device..
4.) Click Record and try it..
5.) Stop it and play it back..


IF THAT DONT WORK REPLY HERE AND WE WILL HAVE A LOOK AT THE DRIVERS..

Edirol Ua 25 Making humm noise when recording Mic


I had the same problem, it was due to the charger i had for the laptop, this problem can be accomplished by purchasing STEREO leads. I do not know the reason they work, but if anyone does find out please tell me

Creative Labs CT4870 / CT4780 Sound Card voice card problem


you need to go to start then all programs ,go up to accessories then to volume control and make sure the mic is not muted and that the mic volume is up. Good luck
