ok, but what do I have to do now? How can I put the switch upwards? just by hand or do I need a tool?

Unscrew the side panel. Remove the smaller of the two gears than rotate the one with the switch. Put it back together. This toggles a lever inside the printer.

Brother printer MFC 7440 N says to replace toner and I already did

Did you insert a brand new toner cartridge or refill only, if you insert a brand new they read your toner cartridge, if you insert a refill toner cartridge, first you need to reset the toner cartridge, i think in the right side, or left please switch and back to normal position.

My brother mfc 7440N prints splotches every 3-3.5" on every page printed. This occurred with the previous and new toner cartridges. How to fix?

For crying out loud.

The "blotch" is caused by damage to the drum or to the toner fusing roller.

If the "blotch" is loose toner (in other words you can smear it) then the fuser roller is damaged and that assembly needs to be replaced.

If the "blotch" is fused (in other words you cannot smear it around) then the drum is damaged and that assembly needs to be replaced.

The original MSRP for the Brother MFC-7440n in 2008 was $429 (US) / 213 pounds [FixYa couldn't handle the pound sign!! =8-) ] (UK) / $499 (AU). The present street value is about $199 according to Brother ( http://www.brother-usa.com/MFC/ModelCompare/4/MFC7440N_MFC7460DN#.UXBKKKLq3yA ).

A drum unit is $80 (Amazon) or $115 (Staples).

That same $200 could get you a Canon Pixma MX-922 (Canon http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/printers_multifunction/office_all_in_one_inkjet_printers/pixma_mx922). Inkjet? Yes. But fast. Airprint. 2-sided ADF and copying. Auto-duplexing. CD/DVD disc printing. Frankly, if I didn't already have an Epson 835, I would buy this one. My old Canon 820 still chugs along as beautifully as the day I got it (about a zillion years ago).

For $50 more you can get a top-rated laser, their imageCLASS MF4880dw (though oddly, without Airprint - for Airprint in a Canon laser, you have to step up to the big boy: the imageCLASS MF8580Cdw).
.

Well. Have fun!

Error message "put the black toner cartridge back in"

I got this same error message on a newly acquired Brother DCP-7040 that I purchased used off of ebay.

As I was troubleshooting this unit (that I bought untested off of ebay - hey gambling has paid off handsomely for me many times before!), this error message kept popping up.

I checked the COUNTERS (page & Drum life) and found out that the DRUM had 0% life left. BUT, the reason it showed ZERO was because this unit did not have any drum! The toner cartridge (TN-360) needs to sit WITHIN the drum (DR-360) on this DCP-7040 unit, as well as in models DCP-7030, MFC-7340, MFC-7345C, and MFC-7440N.

So perhaps some of these "put the black toner cartridge back in" problems could be related to the DRUM (or lack thereof). A possible tipoff (since the toner cartridge actually does slide into the unit much like other units that do not use Brother's DRUM carrier) seems to be the relative ease with which the toner cartridge slides into the DCP-7040 and really doesn't seem to "lock" into position real firmly.

Brother MFC-9440CN Laser Printer is saying toner life end and I just put a new cartridge in.

If you want to reset your Brother MFC 9440N machine so you no longer have the error message: Toner End of Life, do the following:

1. Open the front cover of the 7820N, that is, the cover that allows you to pull out the toner and drum, but don't pull out the drum/toner.
2. Push the button: Options (located on the left of the control pad).
3. Type: *00 on the keypad.

The Brother MFC 9440N should be reset and the Toner End of Life message should disappear. Warning, this may void your warranty and ultimately damage your machine if you are reusing or refilling your cartridges, but you should already know that. Hope this helps.

I have a Brother MFC-7440N machine. On 7/22/10

The toner cartridges have a small port on the side that the printer uses to check the toner level. Our 7440N tells us it will soon need a new toner cartridge and will then print another 400 copies. Search YouTube for Brother Toner Cartridge and it will show you how to modify the cartridge by covering up the portholes with tape. Since there is obviously some kind of sensor, you might need to get a can of air and clean out any extra toner. Lastly, the Brother cartridges have "reset gears" which are replaced when the cartridges are refilled. You might have a cartridge which the gears were not replaced on.

How to remove a brother mfc-7440n drum???

When you replace the toner cartridge on the unit, you pull out the drum with the cartridge, and then snap the new toner cartridge back in. The assembly that the toner snaps into is the drum, if you flip it over it has a large black roller which wears out over time.

Toner cartridge problem

When you remove the drum & toner unit from the machine, there is a small round window where a beam beams through the toner. block it with a piece of paper. Put them back and print again.

I REPLACE THE TONER CARTRIDGE BUT ON LCD IT DISPLAY MESSAGE TONER LIFE END,OPEN FRONT COVER AND REPLACE TONER CARTRIDGE

Is this a genuine Brother replacement cartridge, if not you may find that it is not recognised by your MFC. Also worth a try is removing and reinstalling the new cartridge ensuring all protective packaging is removed. Also remove and reinstall the Drum unit as Brother actually recommend this as part of a new toner install
