Can not display what? Video? It should once in vtr mode. If it still does not work are you still getting signal to the LCD when recording? Does it Show on the LCD when connected to final cut? If you are getting any signal to it, it is a setting, prob mess with the video out settings, if not hardware.
If you want to display the info, try turning title on also turn character display off and on.

Lost manual. Cannot get HR A591U JVC VCR program to record a future cable tv program. Seems I have tried everything but it does not record as I set up. It will record an existing show by pressing...

Timer Recording JVC VCR HR A591U
Timer recording can be programmed on-screen with
the remote control. The built-in timer allows automatic
unattended recording of up to 8 programs within 1
month.

EXAMPLE: Program a timer recording for the 26th day,
channel 125 (CATV), 11:00 - 11:30 PM on timer program
number 1 (Tape speed: EP).

When a TV is connected with an audio/video cable, turn the
TV and this VCR on and select the video input mode on the
TV.

• After timer recording is completed, the VCR turns off
automatically.
• You can program the timer recording while a regular
recording is in progress; the menu screens will not be
recorded.
• The timer recording will start at 20 seconds before the time
you predetermined.

Press MENU on the Remote.
Check the “TIMER REC SET”
option is selected, then press
ENTER.

Press SET –/+ to select one of
the program lines, then press
ENTER.

Press SET –/+ to select the
date, then press ENTER.

Set the start time, end time,
channel and tape speed as in
step 3.
NOTE: To record from external
source, press SET –/+
and set the channel to
"L". "L" will appear next
to CH 125 (or 69).

To enter other programs,
repeat step 2 through 4. Or,
press MENU twice to return
to the normal screen.

Press TIMER on the Remote.
The power will go off, the
TIMER REC indicator ( ) will
light and the VCR stands by
for recording.

To cancel a program:

Press the SET –/+ to select the
“TIMER REC SET” option in the
MENU. Then press SET –/+ to
select the unnecessary program,
and press CANCEL to cancel the
program.

Hi! On my DSR-1800, the display in the upper lefthand part of the front panel has suddenly gone black! The machine works otherwise. I have disconnected the cables inside and sprayed with an electronics...

There are a number of possibilities here:

1) Power to the display is missing (check the power suppy and the pins of the display itself for poor/broken solder connections).
2) Display driver IC defective
3) Main CPU not sending info to display IC.

Were there any other symptoms prior to the display stopping? If not, check for the connections at the display itself first and update this with the results. I'll look up the service manual in the meantime to check for other posibilities.

FRIEND HAS A SONY FXE 100 AND HAS LOST THE MANUAL. THE COMPOSITE VIDEO INPUTS AREN'T WORKING...BEEN HELPING HIM SEARCH FOR A SERVICE OR OWNER'S MANUAL WITH NO LUCK. ANY HELP YOU CAN OFFER? THANKS!

Chances are that the composite inputs are not selected in the settings. You need a display connected to the MONITOR output to see what you're doing. Then press the SCREEN button (just below the RECORDER readout) until "Menu" lights up next to it. Then press the large round wheel in while keeping the MENU button depressed - this will bring up the menu settings on the monitor. Then press the MENU button in the "Dial Menu" section - while keeping it pressed, rotate the large round knob until "Setup Item 101" appears in the display- this is the Video Input Select area.

Release the MENU button to select Item 101 - then press the DATA button while rotating the large round knob until S-V changes to V (going from S-Video to Composite ). When you've reached the desired setting, press the SET button to store it in memory. Keep in mind that you have to do this on P1, P2, R and/or AUX depending on which channels you want to change. The factory default is S-Video, so that is probably how the machine is set on each channel. When you've finished setting the channels to your preference, press the SCREEN button to exit the menu.

I've found that the $20 (or so) investment on one of the many manual sites pays for itself many times over in "frustration control". I can attest that www.servicemanuals.net is quite trustworthy, and in most cases you can download and print the manual immediately. The sites that offer "free manuals" are more trouble than they're worth as you have to download all kinds of crap you don't need, and they pop up when you don't want them to and slow down your computer. Has VCR to TV hookup been changed? Cabling errors will result in no display from the VCR (no tape video/audio, no menu display). If you are using the TV aux/VCR input connections, you must select this input before anything from the VCR will be displayed. If you've verified hookup is correct, then perhaps something is afoul with the VCR. Try hooking it up to another TV.
