Hp Xb3000 notebook expansion base

Like others my xb3000 will no longer power my lap top. It stopped suddenly. I have opened it and I can access the circuit board. Is there a way to reset?

One Expert referred to a "MB". What is that? Also I see no broken connections on the board? What is meant by a "dry connection"?

  • Bert61 Aug 23, 2008

So far I not been provided a solution. I have disconected all coonectors to the circuitboard reconnected them and still no power. Any more suggestions?

  • Bert61 Aug 23, 2008

No broken connections visible. I did not mention, but I bought this device less then 18 months ago; and it was in a well ventilated area on a desk work station. It has never been dropped, no liquid spills and was connecte ony to my HP dv9000 notebook running Vista business.

  • Bert61 Aug 23, 2008

Is there a way to get a new circuit board? HP Tecnical support is useless.

  • Bert61 Aug 23, 2008

How do you reset the connections?

  • Bert61 Aug 23, 2008

Jonniewalker suggests that it looks like a power problem on the right side of the board. He says I can reset the connectons on the internal board. How do I do that?

  • Bert61 Aug 23, 2008

I will try it, but I do not believe it will solve the problem.

Now sicne you already disconnected all the connection, I will advice you to connect everything back make sure you connect them properly , then after that plug the power adapter and let it charge for about a couple of hour then try to power it back on and see if it will power on now..

You can also check this link for some possible cause of this problem and its solutions http://www.daileyint.com/hmdpc/repair.htm

Your laptop docking bay has quite a simple circuit, inside it is just connecting extenal base socket to connections to laptop.
All you have to do is rebuild connection using solderer and replacement cables.
Use a tester to find out what cable is not working. You put tester extremities on the two sides of the cable, if it returns infinite impadance, then contact is faulty, rebuild contact with a piece of wiring.

The expansion base has a power management system in them, just as the laptop does. They're almost identical. I would say that the PM system has faile in the base, and the board will need to be replaced. Here's a link that you can purchase a new board from.

This is not a simple board, and I believe the power connects to the left side, not the right, and there is no simple reset, or any reset at all on these boards. You have a failed board component. This can be hard to trace, even for experienced techs, and I can tell you from experience, that the replacement component will cost as much or more than the $37.59 board at the link I posted earlier, and there's no guarantee that it will work or you won't run into another failed component down the line from the first. I could understand if this was a $300 or $400 board that needed replaced, but $37.59, plus piece of mind that it's new and under warranty. Purchase a new board and be done with it. Here's the link again.

Dear,
is the inner side of the fan and circuit dusty..
so do a dedusting with blower.
dry connection means dry soldering. sometimes due to some reasons the components that connect with board with solder got dried.
but did u check the battery. is it fully charged or have u tried with changing battery.

regards,
dont rate it until u satisfied.

Loose connection or cold solder and cleaning problem this is the main caused of no power..Cold solder issues - each component is soldered into small holes on the printed circuit board which in turn connects said component to the other components. Due to time, heat, use, some solder joints would be cracked or loose. It is possible that the cold solder is still minimally connected (hanging by a thread). When the lap top turns on heat would be generated which would be sufficient to further loosen up the solder joint to the point it no longer provides electrical contact. Jarring the unit creates movement inside enough to re establish the contact, sometime good enough sometimes not enough.

Again, since the unit still operates (sometimes) then it is highly probable that there are no defective components. As you have surmised, it is possibly a loose connection, solder joints are "connections" except that molten soldering lead is used to attach/connect the component to the board, "loose connection" in this sense is equal to "cold solder".

Again on the assumption of no defective parts, then seeking a more experienced buddy for the soldering might be to your advantage. ....

Good luck:

Regards,
VOTIT

Check the wireing and look for dry joints, my laptop charger had this issue, the 2nd cable was loose.

also check for faulty components like bulky or broken capasitors.

Is it possible to connect the HP xb3000 to an apple computer

It's only possible if the main connector will fit into the apple. I haven't seen the female connectors of apple computers lately, but I'd bet that the HP XB3000 connector will only fit into an HP Laptop.

HP XB3000 Docking Station HDD Hard Drive Tray
I just received an XB3000 expansion base and I've found an opening for an expansion hard drive, but it needs a special tray. Ebay has a seller who is pricing them at $119. Less the drive itself. I payed a total of $36 for my docking station and I'm not sure what magic the extra drive would bring about. So if I find out that adding a hard drive inside my fancy docking station works magic I'll purchase the tray, but if it doesn't do anything special I'll skip the waste of money.
