I also have a Axim X51. It too would shut down and I'd have to reset it in order for it to power up. I purchased a new battery and charged it, but it still will not power up. I've contacted Dell and have done everything they suggested. I've checked the side lock, the battery cover lock, done a soft reset, a hard reset. It powers up to the AC outlet and to the USB with out the battery. It just will now power up while using the battery. I'm about ready to throw it out the window.....HELP!!!
To everyone that's having problems with not booting up or back plate battery cover warning messages on your Dell PDA, I think I've found the answer, I have 2 Dell's PDA's, 1 a X51v & the other a X50v, I was having problems with both of them (1 had battery cover warning messages & the other had a screen freezing) so I stripped the 2 of them down when I had both rear shells together I noticed that the small piece of sponge that Dell fit to the latching mechanism one was on the far right of the latching plate on one & the other was in the middle of the plate, I looked to see which shell belong to which PDA & the one I was having problem with battery cover warning messages the sponge far right, so I swapped the back shells around & booted it up BINGO!!!!! problem solved, I'm fairly sure the SPONGE SHOULD BE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE LATCH PLATE, if I'm right Dell engineers & executives should be shoot, such a simple fix why didn't they let owners know about this. This has got to be easier than trying to bridge the switch contacts or rip the switch off the board, give it a go guys, Please let me know if it works on your PDA. I will upload some photo should any of you guys need.
From what I have been told is to never download any emails onto the PDA. By doing this it always totally rinses out your battery. If you are doing this then you should get rid of that feature, otherwise contact Dell for a replacement if its possible.

Unfortunately............no. Too many differences in hardware. There ARE however, there are ways to make it web accessable using bluetooth through a cell phone. Very doable and worth doing with any of the Dell x5x series PDAs. Can be done, I've just never gone that far to find out how.Check out Mobilitysite and HTCGeeks for a wealth of info on anything Dell Axim (other mobile stuff too!).
Dell made an entry into the market of Personal Digital Assistants (PDA)
with Axim X5. The Dell Axim comprises of families of X5, X3, X30, X50
and X51. The Dell Axim PDA can be connected to the computer either by
using a cradle or a sync cable. The sync cable connects the device to
the computer directly. Here are the steps for connecting a Dell Axim to
a computer using a sync cable.
Microsoft ActiveSync software must be installed in order to connect the
PDA to the computer. This software is found in the Dell Axim Pocket PC Companion CD.
The Axim X51 PDA has a 36-pin connector, while the X3 has a 22-pin docking connector.
Connect the USB connector found at the end of the sync cable to the computer.
the PDA. If the PDA is not properly cabled to the computer, you will
get the following message: “Connect your device to a computer using a
sync cable or cradle before running the system update. Ensure that
ActiveSync is installed on the computer and that the ActiveSync
connection is successful.”
Ensure that the Dell logo faces upward.
Use the sync cable to set up a partnership, which can be done multiple times when you sign in as a guest.
