Are you talking about the switch to lock the carriage during transport? If so, this should not be on during usage.

Scanner is locked . How am I going to unlock it

Many scanners employ a mechanical latch or lock to prevent the internal scanning mechanism from moving around during transport. Look for a mechanical latch, slide switch or button that has "lock" on it on the top or side of the scanner. If you need more help provide the make and model of your scanner.

I have a Brother MFC 8440. The scan bar has stopped functioning the bar deos not move to scan the documents. It makes intermittant sounds but seems stuck in its resting place?

If the device was moved without the light bar being locked prior to moving, it is possible that the light bar was knocked out of alignment and it will not work. It is very important to lock the light bar prior to moving for that very reason. I would suggest you take the device to a qualified specialist to identify the issue.

I have scanner hooked up to laptop and i press scan, it says scanning but has nothing showing up for a picture scanned

Is this a new scanner? If so, most scanners come "locked".
Make sure you consult your user manual and remove the lock (usually by turning a knob/handle/switch under the hood somewhere).

If this has scanned before, watch the scanner bed as you try to scan. If the light does not coarse the entire scanner bed, then the lock may have become re-enabled... or the motor could have come off track. Sometimes this can be fixed by manually adjusting things inside (be careful! as this could really damage your scanner).

If the light does move entirely across the bed, try to re-install the software onto your computer. If you dont have the software, you can grab a copy at dell's support site.

Also, check your cables. If you are trying to scan through a network, you might try USB instead, just to make sure the scanner works. and its not a connection problem.

The connection type can be set during installation.

Hope this helps!

Ricoh Aficio Color 6513 scanning mechanism lock

A locking mechanism holds and protects scanner optics during shipment.
You product is a printer though, not a scanner, and does't have any physical locking mechanism or switch, so the instruction to lock down the scanning mechanism doesn't apply.
Just turn off the main power switch.

My Visioneer 8650 flatbed scanner with auto document feed gives a message when I try to scan a document, telling me to move the switch on the bottom from the "locked" to "unlocked" position. The lock is...

Actually a very common problem. Try the following:
1. Power down then re-power up the scanner.
2. Try slightly moving scanner. Sometimes a small change works to fix.
3. Change one of your scan setting to flatbed scan (not adf). Do a test scan under this setting. This will usually kick start scanner unit to unlock.
4. Last resort, by does also work...give it a medium slap on the side, sometimes unjams the scanner light.
5. Super last resort, power down over night, it almost always works the next day. (could be that lock up is heat related to scan lamp, dont know but just a guess).
Excellent scanner, so worth the effort to try these fixes.

Scanner won't scan

L3-00 means the scanner unit/carriage is locked up/not moving. If its just been moved then something could have been knocked slightly out of place.
You will need to remove the main glass and see if you can move the unit by hand - perhaps freeing up the bind. make sure there is nothing obstructing the free movement of the unit. check for loose cables/wires that could get in the way.. make sure the main drive wire is still correctly routed/attached. Make sure the the rail the unit runs on is lightly lubricated. Make sure the unit is sitting square with the rails it runs on. Make sure there is not a locking mechanism (used while moving the copier) that has been engaged. The drive motor that runs the pull cable could be locked up/not rotating.
That covers about all the basics.
Hope this will help.

Continually scanning

Make sure the lock switch is in the unlocked position. The lock switch is on the bottom of the scanner. It sounds like something is preventing the scanning bar from getting to the home position. If the scanner was somehow locked with the scanning head being out of the home position, then the result would be what you describe.

Samsung CLX-3160FN "scanner locked"

Every Samsung multifunctional device has a scanner lock underneath the glass. This is to prevent scanner damage during shipment. Th user's manual in the CD and the unpacking sheet clearly illustrate where this lock is. If you open the top lid and look to the lower left corner of the glass, you will see a small lock-open/lock-closed symbol. Underneath that symbol you will find the lock. I'm including a small visual reference of a similar model. Just remember to turn off and on the unit after the lock is removed.

Makes grinding noises, refuses to scan; WinXP

take a look on the underside of the scanner. there may be a switch that goes from lock to unlock. try to move it to lock and back into unlock. this lock is usually used to lock the bar from moving during shipping. if this got moved back to lock or bumped while you had it turned over, the scanner will not allow the bar to move.. try this first.
