Are you talking about the switch to lock the carriage during transport? If so, this should not be on during usage.

All scanners come with the scanning head locked to prevent damage to it during shipping. On the back of the scanner, where the power cord and wires connect, there will be a sliding switch, sometimes a turning type lock, with two positions, one with the icon of a closed [so locked] padlock and the other with the icon of a open [so unlocked] padlock. Every scanner I have bought describes this lock in the setup manual.

First of all, here is a link to the main ONLINE SUPPORT page for your model:

http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/scanners/canoscan_series/canoscan_5000f

And here is the direct link to the User's Manual Quick Start Guide:

http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/6/0900003506/01/5000Fquickstartguide-e.pdf

To view the Support Page or the Owner's Manual with Operating Instructions just use your mouse to click on the link, which is the underlined and highlighted text just above. This will open a new web browser page automatically for you and allow you to view the information at the website indicated and the contents of the Owner's Manual.

You may need ADOBE READER installed on your computer to read PDF documents. You can download this free at WWW.ADOBE.COM if necessary. Click on the DOWNLOAD ADOBE READER button on right side of the ADOBE home page when you get there, and then just follow the onscreen instructions to install it.

The scanner is fitted with a transport lock to prevent the scanning head from being damaged when the scanner is moved around.
See page 7 of the ONLINE USER'S MANUAL for detailed illustrations and instructions on HOW TO UNLOCK THE SCANNING UNIT.
Basically you just slide the locking switch, which is located by the right main hinge on the scanner bed, to the unlocked position.

Thank you very much and good luck.

Paper james during scan, clicking sound in upper

Clicking sound is not a healthy sound, check if any gear wheel is damaged. Is the tray moving up properly? There are a few sensitive parts like the clutch, gears etc. If you cant fix it please call a trained technician, so that damage is minimal.

Continually scanning

Make sure the lock switch is in the unlocked position. The lock switch is on the bottom of the scanner. It sounds like something is preventing the scanning bar from getting to the home position. If the scanner was somehow locked with the scanning head being out of the home position, then the result would be what you describe.

Trouble shooting

The "car sound" could be an indication that the scanner is locked. Check the lock switch on the bottom of the scanner. Move the switch back and forth a few times and then leave it in the locked position. Another possibility is that you are scanning heavy items such as books. If too much weight is placed on the scanner glass, then pressure could be enough to prevent the scanning element from moving as it should.

The code 201 sometimes can indicate a power issue...meaning the scanner is not getting enough power. Try connecting the usb cable to a different port on the computer (preferrably directly to the computer and not through a USB hub).

Problem with new set

Sounds like the lock-switch is in the locked position. This is on the bottom of the scanner. Move the lock-switch back and forth a few times and then leave it in the unlock posotion. Try scanning again.

If you are scanning a book, it may be too heavy and putting enough pressure on the scanner that it is preventing the scan head from moving fully. Try scanning with nothing on the glass to see if it does the same thing.

Sound

First solution
Probably the sensor is jammed .
The rod can be moved manually . If it does not move it needs cleaning.
Second solution
Refer to the Troubleshooting in the device manual.

Makes grinding noises, refuses to scan; WinXP

take a look on the underside of the scanner. there may be a switch that goes from lock to unlock. try to move it to lock and back into unlock. this lock is usually used to lock the bar from moving during shipping. if this got moved back to lock or bumped while you had it turned over, the scanner will not allow the bar to move.. try this first.
