Software will not install on HP j5785 from the current installation files for Windows 7. Gets to step where trying to find printer connected to USB port but does not do so. In devices and printers, the printer is shown as connected.

1. Solution one: Register Windows components
Step one: Register the Atl.dll file
Click the Windows icon , and then click Run . The Run window opens.

Solution two: Temporarily disable services, and then reinstall the HP software
Step one: Temporarily disable startup services
Click the Windows icon on the Windows taskbar.
Type msconfig in the Search programs and files box, and then press Enter . The MSCONFIG window opens.
Select the Startup tab, and then click Disable All to turn off any programs that start when you turn on the computer.
Select the Services tab, the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, click Disable All , and then click OK .
Step two: Temporarily disable Windows Update
Click the Windows icon, click All Programs , and then click Windows Update .
In the left pane, click Change settings .
Under Recommended updates , click Never check for updates , and then click OK . If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
Step three: Remove the HP software
Unplug the USB cable connecting the product to the computer.
On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon, and then click Control Panel . The Control Panel window opens.
Open the list of installed programs and remove the software. Click Programs . In the list of installed programs, click the HP product, and then click Uninstall .
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software removal.
Step four: Reinstall the HP software

Step five: Enable startup programs
Click the Windows icon on the Windows taskbar.
Type msconfig in the Search programs and files box, and then click msconfig in the dialog box. The MSCONFIG window opens.
Select the General tab, select the Normal Startup check box, click Apply , and then click Close .
Click Restart to make these changes when the computer restarts.
Restart the computer.

Step six: Re-enable Windows Update
Click the Windows icon, click All Programs , and then click Windows Update .

Solution three: Turn off services, delete HP files, and then reinstall the software
Step one: Turn off services
Click the Windows icon, and then type services.msc in the Search programs and files box. The Computer Management window opens.
Click the arrow next to Services and Applications , if necessary, so that Services is visible.
Double-click Services so that Services is visible in the right pane.
NOTE:You might have to expand the window to see all of the services.
In the list of services, click PML Driver (or some variation of that driver name). The PML Driver Properties window opens.
Change the Start-up Type entry to Disabled , click Apply , and then click OK .
Find the entry for Net Driver HPZ12 , and then double-click it. The Net Driver HPZ12 Properties window opens.
Change the Start-up Type entry to Disabled , click Apply , and then click OK .
Step two: Remove HP files
Right-click the Windows icon , and then click Explore All Users . Windows Explorer opens.
If necessary, click the arrow next to C: (or your hard drive) to expand the list of options.

Under system32 , find the following files:
HPZipm12.dll

Right-click each file, and then click Delete .

INSTALLING SOFTWARE ON MACINTOSH OS 10.2.X, 10.3X, and 10.4.X USB installation instructions

1. Insert the CD-ROM.
2. Run the installation utility.
3. After the software installation is complete, attach the USB cable to the printer and the computer and then restart the computer.
4. After the computer has restarted, open the Print Center or Printer Setup Utility to see if the printer name appears in the Printer List.
5. If the printer name displays in the Printer List, the setup is complete. If the printer name does not display in the Printer List, go to the next step.
6. Click the Add button, and then select USB from the drop-down list. 7. Select HP Color LaserJet 2605 and then click Add. The printer name displays in the Printer List. Setup is complete.

CAUSE:
Certain HP services (and associated DLL files) were somehow partially/improperly installed. (Possibly, from a previous failed install?)
The Windows services (files) were:
Pml Driver HPZ12 (C:\Windows\System32\HPZipm12.dll)
Net Driver HPZ12 (C:\Windows\System32\HPZinw12.dll)
The existence of these 2 files in the System32 directory was causing this error in my situation. Somehow, the installation script was not identifying that these files were already installed (or improperly installed) and failing to properly set them to be installed again.
SOLUTION:
Steps:
1) Check to make sure that the 2 Windows services above are not running (or not installed).
2) Rename/delete the 2 associated service DLL files (this will only be possible once the services are stopped)
3) Run the installation again.

then install software from downloaded version of original pritner install only basic drivers first and imaging devices only and use solution center 12. cue 12.
