I couldn't open my Swingline Optima model 8784x either. Their website wasn't helpful except they mention you can change staples "with the push of a button." Button, I thought. What button? In the picture, there's a black button at the back end of the stapler. Mine is missing! The button, if it were there, would press down on a metal tab, releasing the staple slide which pops out the front. Insert staples, push it closed, you're done! I used a letter opener to push down the metal tab.
I could pry open the lower part of the upper tip of the jaw with my car key, opening less than an inch long room for new staples (the ones I had did not fit). The tip would not stick back. It seems to hold to the main upper steel part with just four holes that would probably sit on the four respective edges of the main part had I pushed it hard enough. I gave up. (I got stains on the shirt from watery machine oil).

If the button is missing on the back, or has fallen off like mine has, use a flat-blade screwdriver to push down on the lever in the slot in the back. The the staple holder will pop open in the front, or you may have to pull it open.

This happened to me as well. I am not sure what causes this but heres what I did to fix it.
Just grab the top part of the stapler ( where it says Swingline) and pull up, like you are trying to seperate the top and bottom. You will hear a click and your stapler should work fine.

I have 8 boxes of 1/4" staples, 1000 staples per box, and I haven't an 800 or 900 staple gun, so I'd like either an 800 or 900 Swingline staple gun or for someone to buy my staples.

There is something jammed at the head of the stapler. Unjam.
