Sony dvd dru-190a not able to read dvd's but reading cd's. Please help.

It sounds like the laser on your drive is gone. But there are a couple of things you can try first before buying a new one.

Uninstall the driver for it in Device Manager and let windows reinstall it automatically on reboot.
or use DriverEasy to install it > download here .
Uninstall and reinstall whatever burning software you use.

Take a look at this thread. Some of the tips there might apply to you.

The drive I had trouble with back when I posted in July finally died a couple of weeks ago. CD's worked fine, just like you. All my good settings with Auto Run, etc, were still there. So I bought a new drive and I'm back in business.

The only thing I can think of is that lens may have some dust on it, try a CD lens cleaning disk or a blast of air from an aerosol spray can.

After this, I'm afraid its down a replacement.

Till last month the drive was working fine and BIOS was displaying the name and model no. properly. But from then the name and model no. is overwritten and the OS is not able to detect the drive and...

Try changing the data and/or power cable using with the optical drive. If after that the bios don't see your optical drive then also try reseting your bios, after those 2 checks if the optical drive remains undetected is fried, need to be replaced.

Dru-190a sony it takes 50-60 min to write

Just right click on my computer, go to properties> hardware> device manager> IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers. there u will find several primary and secondary IDE Channels. Right click on first IDE channel and goto properties> Advanced settings, change transfer mode to "DMA if Available". Repeat it with all the channels. If problem still persists then uninstall the channel containing ur DVD Writer and restart your computer. It will detect new hardware as DVD Writer. Now if it is showing the transfer mode "DMA if Available" by default then your problem is solved.
