same thing happened to me... i bought the phone unlocked, didn't have a clue it was hacked, just thought it was an open phone. so today i upgraded and voila, can't activate the phone... invalid simcard.

i'm in Spain, so this never should have been locked to AT+T, or the seller should have warned me of this potential problem. personally, i think that iTunes should give a warning that upgrading will lock the phone if it's been unlocked.. after all, plenty of people get them legally unlocked by their providers after a certain amount of time.. i know this is the policy with Orange in France, so the software upgrade should absolutely NOT re-lock an iPhone.

I think i'll post something about this at the Apple site.

I have come in to post the solution to my own problem.... i was doing this for a friend, who had bought the iPhone unblocked... needless to say, in the early days many people hacked the phones to be able to sell them (especially in europe where we are) as usable by any cell provider. ok... the only solution is to re-hack the phone.

after much searching around and experimenting i finally found a program that will activate, unlock and jailbreak the phone--- the rest didn't work. this particular program ws developed by mac users and they just came out with a windows version this month... so for either OS you can do this... you need two more files to do this.

i can provide you with the info on the program and files, but would first like to check with this site's policies to be sure that i'm not breaking any rules.

still, i think it would be nice if they gave you the firmware upgrade without locking you back into AT&T.

ok... i just read the solution above my last post... this is the program i used after unsuccessfully having tried several others, but i used the quick version for windows: QuickPwn22

just download and unzip the file and click on the .exe file to start the program... you will need to also download these two boot loader files: bl39.bin & bl46.bin i found them both in one file (boot_loader.zip) but i wasn't on my computer so i don't have the url for them... shouldn't be to hard to find though.

be sure that first of all you get the right pwn program and bootloader files for your OS (windows or mac) and that you sit and stare at the screen with your iPhone in your hand pressing and releasing buttons as the program instructs you to do... it works like a charm!! in about 5 minutes you should have full use of your iPhone back.

QuickPwn22 works on both the 2G & 3G iPhone. (i have used it on both phones)

this program will activate, unlock and jailbreak your phone, as well as installing cydia and an installer for 3rd party apps. you should know that it will probably affect your warranty to do all of this. one nice advantage of jailbreaking the phone was that cydia had a program, among the many others in the install list, that adds video recording capabilities to your camera... something that apple has not offered (!?!) this far... great image resolution too! just look in the multimedia section of cydia to find it.

During the install setup you will also have an option to add icons... what this does is replace your apple with a pineapple... a reminder to you not to upgrade your firmware again without being sure you can get everything back as it should be.

    hope that helps!

Probably haven't "you pwnaged" the iPhone thus making it "bricked".
D/L Pwnang 2.02 for Mac or WinPwnage 2.06 (I think) for Windows.
The software is .

Upgrade my iphone

Indian cellular systems do not (yet) support the iPhone, so your connectivity will be 'iffy' at best. You have to install iTunes (free from Apple.com) to upgrade the software.
