Compaq battery/power problem

I have a compaq presario and though the power supply is plugged in, the battery is not charging.  i had a similar problem with a compaq laptop before this one, which i why i have this one...because the battery on that wouldn't charge.  but it was a matter of a bad connection i think because if i held the power supply in the computer manually it would work for a while.  anyway, this new one is just not charging at all.  do i just pop in the flash drive, back everything up and get a new PC?  (assuming i even have enough power to do that)

Does the laptop show any signs of receiving any power at all?

It could be a number of things; a faulty motherboard, a damaged power socket, faulty charger, faulty battery.

Sounds like the power socket from what you described. Has it been caught or tugged, or in any way mishandled? They're quite fragile sometimes.

Do you have a multimeter at home?
If you do, check the voltage the PSU is giving off is correct. If it's not, I'd see if you can find another PSU to test it off, ask in your local electronics/hardware store if you can try one out.

Have you tried powering it on with power but without the battery?

If it is giving off the correct power, it sounds like it's a problem with the power socket/PCB. Find a laptop specialist in the area and get them to give you an estimate. It may not be worth doing, I'm not sure what they'd charge. At our shop, for PCB cleanup and socket replacement is between 50~100, depending on how bad the damage is.

It could be worse, it could well be a problem with the motherboard. The problem with diagnosing this sort of thing is that there's so many things to go wrong, and to find out, you've got to open up the laptop to test everything, which generally incurs a labour charge, as stripping down and putting together a laptop without any testing is a several hour job, and a fiddly one at that.

If all else fails, speak to the people who give you an estimate and find out if your laptop's covered by any kind of warranty or insurance, they should be able to do a letter to cover you.

Good luck!

That problem is usually because the "charging unit" inside the laptop is broken and not putting any juice into the battery.

...unless your battery is genuinely dead, which is unlikely. Most batteries have a "self-test" button, with an LED bar-graph indication. That should at very least flash the lowest bar when you press it.

Pretty sure the charging unit is your issue.
Please either give me a full score or none at all... I know this answer doesn't fix your problem, but if it means reducing my average, i'd rather have not responded at all. =-]

My compaq presario c795tu battery is not charging

Unplug the power supply, take a stiff tooth brush and clean the battery terminals in the laptop plus the battery, re-install the battery and plug the charger in, If that fails you need to find out if the charging circuits are putting out the proper voltage before you replace the battery.

Just purchased a compaq presario secondhand--is the battery supposed to charge automatically when you plug the computer in? Mine is not. Works perfectly with the power cord though.

All the laptops I have seen since the 1980's charge the battery, if it is installed, while the laptop is running. They charge at a slower rate if you are using the computer, and faster if you just plug it in and leave the computer powered off.
Most have a 'charging' led [green or amber] indicating that the battery is being charged when you plug the laptop in and leave it turned off. If you don't see any indication, check that the battery is connected firmly and that the connectors are not damaged. If possible, try the battery in another machine or a different battery in your machine.

Battery not keeping charge

Some Laptops will not charge unless the PC is started. The moment u shutdown, the main supply via the adapter also stops sending any power for charging the battery. It is similar to most of the compaq presario series too. Try this.....sodeep

Laptop won't turn on, battery won't charge

I had a similar issue with the Armada M700 from Compaq. Never did figure it out exactly. But I do know this. When you unplug the power chord and take out the battery and plug the power chord back in while the battery is out usually for some reason it turned on allowing me to replace the battery which would then begin charging. Your problem interests me because I can really relate!

Compaq Presario 1000

I have a Presario X1050, not sure if they are similar. Remove the screws from the bottom, carefully remove the keyboard with a small flat head screwdriver. You'll find many screws hidden by small plastic covers and rubber feet that will all need to be removed with the screwdriver. You may have to remove the display to get inside the laptop. Ultimately though, the power supply is actually external included on the power cable.
