Question about Compaq Presario 700 470024-192 Notebook
I have a compaq presario and though the power supply is plugged in, the battery is not charging. i had a similar problem with a compaq laptop before this one, which i why i have this one...because the battery on that wouldn't charge. but it was a matter of a bad connection i think because if i held the power supply in the computer manually it would work for a while. anyway, this new one is just not charging at all. do i just pop in the flash drive, back everything up and get a new PC? (assuming i even have enough power to do that)
Do you have a multimeter at home?
If you do, check the voltage the PSU is giving off is correct. If it's not, I'd see if you can find another PSU to test it off, ask in your local electronics/hardware store if you can try one out.
Have you tried powering it on with power but without the battery?
If it is giving off the correct power, it sounds like it's a problem with the power socket/PCB. Find a laptop specialist in the area and get them to give you an estimate. It may not be worth doing, I'm not sure what they'd charge. At our shop, for PCB cleanup and socket replacement is between 50~100, depending on how bad the damage is.
It could be worse, it could well be a problem with the motherboard. The problem with diagnosing this sort of thing is that there's so many things to go wrong, and to find out, you've got to open up the laptop to test everything, which generally incurs a labour charge, as stripping down and putting together a laptop without any testing is a several hour job, and a fiddly one at that.
If all else fails, speak to the people who give you an estimate and find out if your laptop's covered by any kind of warranty or insurance, they should be able to do a letter to cover you.

That problem is usually because the "charging unit" inside the laptop is broken and not putting any juice into the battery.
...unless your battery is genuinely dead, which is unlikely. Most batteries have a "self-test" button, with an LED bar-graph indication. That should at very least flash the lowest bar when you press it.
Pretty sure the charging unit is your issue.
Please either give me a full score or none at all... I know this answer doesn't fix your problem, but if it means reducing my average, i'd rather have not responded at all. =-]
