HI, It has to be a setting and we will figure it out somehow. I am going to do more research today. It might be a few hours as Ihave al arge work lineup this morning. I appreciate your patience. ( I'm going to have to get that film now, you know!)
Here is a link that might be of interest to you. Perhaps we are looking at a compatibility issue.

Is the disc a commercial one? A copy? An older DVD?
Whoops! I forgot to mention that this is a PDF file so you do need acrobat reader to open it. If you don't have it You can download for free at
www.adobe.com/acrobat
I am sort of at the end of the line here. It is a multi region machine and the DVD is a region 1 DVD, so there should not be a problem. Still thinking here. Try making a copy on your computer and see if it gives you a message. Wait though, You said it plays on your laptop, still I wonder if it can be copied and what the message might say?
Does the back of your unit actually say that it is for region 1 or that it is region free?
Okay, I found this on a forum, so I will leave it up to you to decide if you'd like to try it ( It was entered by two different people exactly the same) They have the same player you do.
Make this sequence:
1) Turn on the DVD
2) Open the tray
3) enter 9735
4) Change the region code to 0
5) Exit to main menu
Thank you for your patience. this was quite a challenge and a learning experience for me as well.
