Be sure that

if your using windows xp try this one..

click start>run>type "cmd"> then in cmd type the drive where your pendrive is
for example C:\Documents and Settings\Yaj> E: press enter "type here the drive where your pendrive is found"
make sure that it is in your pendrive now
ex: E:\> format
type format
then there you go
....

make sure you are formatting with a computer that is not fully infected with viruses....

Some usb keys or flash drives have a little switch thatlocks it & makes it read only. Try looking for something like this. Or youtry following these steps:

For USBdrives:

1. Open Start -> Run...
2. type diskmgmt.msc and press enter
3. right click on the partitin you want to format (where the leter and is)
4. select 'Delete Partition...' and confirm
5. right mose button in the same place and select 'Create partition'
6. select primary partition
6. select , file format, disk leter, label etc should be all right if youleave defaults.
7. click ok

This will recreat the partition and format it in proper way.

I hope this information will be helpful. Thank you for using FixYa!

Hi

Virus or Trojans can run some process that keeps running in background. This not only harms the computer, but also prevents the pen drive from formatting as it shows that the drive is in use. Remove and re-insert the pen drive, don't double click on drive and cancel auto-run operations if it starts automatically. Run a virus scan on pen drive, this will help fix the issue. Now format the pen drive.

If my solution make you happy give me four thumb

Hi I have a transcend jetflash d33193 4Gb flash that won't format. It tells me the flash is write protected and i don't she any physical lock. i have tried every possible thing i know on it but it...

The message which you are facing while formatting your flash drive maybe be due to below reasons.
1) It could be due to virus. Try to scan your flash drive with your anti-virus and check.
2) Second reason would be when you connecting your flash drive it may include some autorun files which starts its own when you connect your flash drive and because that file is running it wont allow to be formatted, so try to delete all the files including in your flash drive and than try formatting.
or
There is right protect switch on many pen drives , a physical write protect switch which enables you to either allow writing on the disk or disallow writing on the disk.

All you need to do is toggle the right protect switch and you would be able to write files on your pen drive.

My Pendrive "Write protected"

your pendrive is infected with Autorun.inf virus
to remove this virus install malwarebytes and scan your whole system as well as your pendrive

If the above method is not work

try to format in other operating system like vista or in 7
