Question about IBM ThinkPad T41 2373 Notebook

Thinkpad T41/Windows Vista

I get a blank screen at startup after Microsoft Corp logo, power led stays on that is all, have checked the bios, used F8 to try last known good configuration. Cannot start in safe mode same blank screen, tried leaving it on overnight still nothing.
Recent history is I purchased 256mb ram giving us 512mb, then loaded vista, which has been running ok for 3 months or so, I then purchased a battery for it (we were running it off AC power only), after this we turned it on one morning and that was it, I have since tried without the battery and replaced the 256mb ram with a new one.
Now I have run out of ideas. Can anyone help please. My 10yr old is becming impatient.

Your hard drive has failed and will need replaced. If it were a simple operating system glitch, you would still be able to get to safe mode. Purchase a new hard drive, load the system, and you'll be good to go.

    You need to buy the license for windows 7 from microsoft store online. You may running on a trial preriod which must have expired that is why it lock after startup.

    Windows Vista not Booting Up


    1) Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds to turn off the computer
    2) unplug the power cable and remove the battery from the laptop
    3) Press and hold the power button while the power cable is unplugged and the battery is not connected so as to discharge the computer
    4) Place the battery back again and plug in the power cable.
    5) Look for the F8 key on the keyboard.
    6) Turn on the computer and start tapping F8. Do not stop tapping F8 until you get to a menu.
    7) Use the up and down arrow keys. Highlight Safe mode. Press enter
    8) Log in to system.
    9) Do a System Restore to the date before you left the computer.

    Blank/black screen at power on


    This is hopefully a possible fix. I have encountered a similar problem with windows xp and vista. the fix I found that will eliviate this problem and a startup-reboot-startup-reboot... If you have your original windows (xp or vista) CD lounch it like you would do to do a system install. As the installation starts it will show ask you if you would like to do a recovery using the recovery console, just press ESC and go on. Press the F8 to accept the license. If Windows is not completly broke, it will find the original installation on your hard drie. It will ask if you want to repair. Press the R key and windows will reinstall your operating system, without destroying your software or data. After it is done the system will go to the windows startup screen. You will need your windows product key located on your machine or on the original software packaging.
    I hope this will fix your problem.

    If it boots in safe mode, use msconfig to disable all startup items, then selective enable things one at a time until you find the program or driver that might be causing it to hang.

    If it will not boot into safe mode, you will probably need to try a repair install of Windows. You may want to consult a professional for that, depending on your skill level.
