When I print or copy a multicoloured image specifying to print in colour, it omits the black. When I print the same image specifying to print it all in black, it omits all colours except black. Printer and cartridges are new. Print quality is perfect.

Not sure of the QUESTION..? Do you want to print colour or black and white..? Anyway, try this, bring up image , at top left click on Fix , at top right click on Auto Adjust then go down to Adjust Colour click on and hold Saturation Slider move to left to remove colour ,right to add colour go to print and it should give you a black / white image. Remember to return image back to original colour or image will return to file in b/w hope this works for you..goodluck...T.C.
Are you using genuine Brother color cartridges? If you are, then try different paper (20 pound laser printer paper or plain paper copier paper rather than inkjet paper,) Also, do not use recycled paper. If that does not work, you may need a new imaging (OPC belt) unit, or a new fuser assembly. Check your owners manual about when to replace the imaging unit or fuser. It is usually after 60, 000 prints have been run.
First of all, are you tring to just print gold foil, or a multicoloured image, including gold?
If it's just gold, ensure that on your artwork, everything to be printed is black. Click File -> Print, and click Properties. When the printer dialogue pops up, select Spot Colour, and click the Spot Colour button. Select Single Ink, and Select Gold Foil.
