For most files or programs on my computer the response comes up, windows cannot open this file, to open this file windows needs to know the program that created it. It gives two options to either use a web service which gets me no where because I cannot download anything, and to select a program in the list is impossible. Can you help please

Hi shepand kate,

Each file has an extension that tells windows what type it is. There is an index file that cross references this extension with what to do do with it when you do something to it. Like execute, or Open. If it's Open, It keeps track of what program opens it.

If possible, run Explorer. From the menu bar click Tools. Select Folder Options. Click the File Types Tab. This is where this index is accessed.

Get back to me when you find it.

For additional information click the following link: https://www.fixtoolbox.com/dbffix.html
DBF Fix Toolbox
Also you can try to follow these steps:
1.Click on Start and then Control Panel. 2.Click on the Programs link.

Note: If you're viewing the Small icons or Large icons view of Control Panel, you won't see this link. Click on the Default Programs icon and then click on the Associate a file type or protocol with a program link. Then proceed to Step 4.
    3. Click on the Make a file type always open in a specific program link under the Default Programs heading
    4. In the Set Associations window, scroll down the list until you see the file extension that you want to change the default program for.
    5. Click on the file extension to highlight it, once you've found the one you're looking for.
    6. Click the Change program... button above the scroll bar.

The Open With dialog box should appear.
    7. Look through the options in the Recommended Programs area and choose the application that you want to open the file extension with when you double-click on the particular kind of file on your computer.

Note: Chances are, the applications listed under Recommended Programs will contain the most applicable programs for this file type but be sure to look at the applications under Other Programs. You may need to click the v to expand the list of these programs.

Note: Click Browse... to search through your computer for any program not listed that you'd like to use.
    8. Click the OK button on the Open With window. Windows 7 will refresh the list of file associations to show the new default program to open this type of file.

    9. Click the Close button at the bottom of the Set Associations window. You may also close the Control Panel window if it's still open.

    10. From this point forward, when you double-click on any file with this particular file extension, the program you associated it with in Step 7 will launch and load the particular file.

Important: Whatever program used to automatically open when these types of files were launched will still open these types of files. To use another program, you'll just need to start the program manually and then browse your computer for the particular file.

File names of common Windows applications

Windows operating systems have many useful programs that come built-in and ready to go. These programs can typically be accessed by navigating through the Start menu or opening the Control Panel (or by typing their names in the Search bar if you have Vista). But sometimes you may want to pin the program to your Start menu or create a shortcut on your desktop, so that you can access it quicker and not have to hunt it down every time you want to run it. In order to do that, you'll need to know the program's file name and where to find it (unless you're running Vista, in which case you can use the instant search feature).

Below are some common Windows programs and their respective file names. Each of these files can be found in the \Windows\System32 folder. (The locations may vary on a 64-bit system.)

Command Prompt = cmd.exe
Computer Management = compmgmt.msc
Device Manager = devmgmt.msc
Disk Defragmenter = dfrg.msc
Disk Management = diskmgmt.msc
Services = services.msc
Task Manager = taskmgr.exe

Another useful file to be able to find is the explorer.exe file. Sometimes when the system locks up or a program freezes, your taskbar and/or desktop shortcuts will disappear. Rather than reboot the computer, you can run the explorer.exe file and "refresh" the Windows desktop. The explorer.exe file is located in the \Windows folder.

You can find these files by opening My Computer, selecting the C: drive, and then going to the Windows folder and then the System32 folder (unless you're looking for explorer.exe). Once you've located the file you want, you can right click on it and select either "Pin to Start menu" or "Create shortcut" to make it easier to access in the future.

All my programs open up as a LNK file how do I fix that

Yes, go to one of the files that you KNOW what type of file it is like a xxxxx.PDF. that file opens with adobe then "right click" to open the menu of choices with that file. EXAMPLE "xxxxx.PDF" and select the menu choice "OPEN WITH"
A new menu box will open and you should be able to select the correct program to open the file with, i.e. "ADOBE READER" for the .PDF files. (BE CAREFUL), usually in the bottom left corner of this menu screen there will be a small check box with the question "open all files like this/or type" using this program. If you only use ADOBE for PDF files which you probably do then it's ok. BUT if it is a plain text file or a binary file that has been set to be opened with something else then you have more serious issues to fix.
The same is with MS Word files Power Point ect. select the appropriate program under "open with" to correct the file relationship

Aspire 5750 keeps showing a message There is no associated program to perform the requested action and will not operateon windows 7 Home Premium. What can I do? . What can I do

What type of file are you trying to open? Are you trying to watch a movie, open a document that was written on an older computer, or some other file?

If the software that should open the file is on your computer but not associated with that file type, right click on the file and choose Open With > Choose default program. Then Browse through programs on your computer (Program Files and Program Files (x86) and their sub folders). Alternatively, click Start > Control Panel > Programs. Under Default Programs, select Make a file type always open in a specific program. Scroll down to the extension and add a program for it.

Many computers do not come with all the software you might want. In that case, you will need to get the software or a plug-in to add to your software. For example, a computer with a Blu-ray optical drive may not have the Blu-ray player software. Office files may have similar limits. (WordPad reads Word files; Excel and PowerPoint viewers aren't always included.)

I hope this helps. Please add a comment with the file type you need to open for specific program suggestions.

Cubase 4.0.1 won't run under Windows 7

Try to reinstall the applications responsible for the error:

-- It may happen that any program is responsible for the error as one of the main causes is software malfunction. So, reinstall the program by following the below steps:

-- Go to Start-> Control Panel->Add/ Remove Programs -> choose the program that needs to be reinstalled from a given list and click on Uninstall button.

-- Then after, restart the PC in order to refresh the system setting and make a fresh installation of the program.

Replace the Synsoacc.dll existing on the system:

In case of file corruption, you need to replace the file with new one as it can help you in the error resolution. To do this, follow the below steps:

-- At first, connect online and download a fresh file to save in the computer's memory

-- Browse to c:\Windows\System32 to find the existing file on your PC and rename it to synsoaccBACKUP.dll.

-- Now go to Start-Run and type cmd to open the command prompt.

-- There type the command regsvr32 synsoacc.dll to finally replace the file.

Get fliptoast off my computer

If you are trying to uninstall the application Fliptoast used with/for Facebook then depending on what version of windows you're using (assuming you're using windows) go to: Start, Control Panel, Programs and select uninstall a program. Then find Fliptoast in the list and uninstall it from there.
If this does not remove it you can try a program call CCleaner and you can download it from here.
Once you have this program installed open it and go to Tools and Uninstall. Find Fliptoast in the list of applications, select it then choose Run Uninstaller.

My problem! is when i want to open a file my pc

this is happening when the file association with the program is not made...either the program for that file to be open with is not present...or the file was transferred into the computer and you never had this kinda files before and first time you have to choose a program to open the file with...
in this 2 cases you have to know the type (format ) of the file and browse...choose my computer ..than C drive .../program file...and there choose the suitable program for the file...
and from then on ...the files of that kind will be opened with that program...
if you do not know what program to choose...let me know the file type...(look at the properties by right click on the file and choose properties..there will be at least the abbreviation of the file type..)
and with the name of the file format ..I will look for a program or ..tell you what program to choose for it ..
Another thing that might been happening .(in case that the computer makes this request for all files when yo are trying to open them ) ..is that you been hit by a virus that affected the file association feature ...and you will probably need to reinstall the operation system to be sure that this is removed for good..(format the C partition during the install)....
Or ...if your computer remember the program just as long it is running and after restart is doing the same ...in this case the Bios Battery is dead or not making the correct contact ...and the computer do not remember the associations choices and it need to be changed....this can be easy recognized cause a side effect is the clock will not be on time...but get to the bios manufacturing date..and 0 hour each time you open it ..in this case change the bios battery ..and it will remember the settings...all you have to do is to re-associate the file one more time after changing it .. accurate ..

You will need to know what program the file was created in. For example...If I were to send you a file with doc at the end of it you would need Microsoft word installed on YOUR computer to be able to open the file. Get in touch with the person that is sending you the file and ask them what program they created it in. Then you will know what program you need to install on your computer.

Hope this helps.

Problem opening some attachments

You need to tell Windows what program you want to use when opening the file since you don't have any program installed that knows this file.

Do you know what kind of file it is? If not, you need to find this out.
Usually you get powerpoint or pdf files in your mail. To read these you need Adobe Acrobat Reader or Microsoft Powerpoint Viewer.

Short, You need to install a program that can handle the files you get in your mail. What program depends on the file.

To know what kind of file it is you have to se what "extension" it have (the three letters after the dot). Normaly you don't see this, but to be able to see it open Explorer and do go through the following:

  1. select Start -> Settings -> Control Panels -> Folder Options
  2. select the View tab
  3. check "show hidden files and folders"
  4. Uncheck "hide file extensions for known file types"
  5. Click OK to finish
Now, save the file on your desk and check the last letters of the file. If it ends with .pdg it's a pdf-file, if it ends with ppt it's a power point file.

If it ends with something else, it needs a different program. To know which, just ask again :)
