How to back up my hard drives and create a boot up disk

You can make an image of your hard disk and copy it to a CD, use this to restore your computer.
There several programs that can do this.
I like Nortons Ghost. If you prefer something else do a Google search for this type of programs.

I have a dell gx240 im trying o make it boot and it just wont.i have used maxblast5 and 4 ive tried xp os and it wont install the hardrvives are used from an old computer, wht can i do to stsrtthe install

If your using the Dell recovery disk that came with the computer, chance are it wont install unless your using an identical hard drive as the original that was installed in it. You may need a new full OS disk. If you still have the original drive, may be able to ghost or clone the old drive and get it to work. There are quite a few programs for copying (ghosting, cloning) a complete hard drive image onto a new drive.

Post reports NO HDD installed. Spinrite 6 reports HDD is very sick and one should try to copy off files as it it is going down.

Hi,

If the post screen is saying no HDD installed then you have remove the hard drive from the machine as soon as possible before it fails completely and you loose all the data you have on it.

As soon as you have a new HDD installed and an operating system on it you can then connect the bad hard drive as a slave device either in an external case or internal for the time being so you can get your data from it.

Regards.

I keep getting the message 2010

After a BIOS upgrade or installation of a new hard drive, the following error message may appear at POST: ERROR
2010: Warning: Your internal hard disk drive (HDD) may not function correctly on this system. Ensure that your HDD is supported on this system and that the latest HDD firmware is installed. Press <Esc> to continue

Press <F1> to Setup
The system appears to boot normally after escape is pressed and the operating system will load.
Solution There are three possible workarounds to eliminate the error:
  1. Update the hard drive firmware to the latest level. Download the hard drive firmware update, and then apply to your hard drive.
Note: This update requires a floppy disk drive.
  2. Replace the hard drive with one supported by the system being used.
  3. Use the hard drive, producing the 2010, error in the Ultrabay of the system or a docking station with the second hard drive adapter instead. The interface to the Ultrabay is parallel ATA. For more information visit, ThinkPad Second Hard Drive Adapter for Ultrabay Slim - Overview
Additional information This error is purposely generated to alert the user to potential problems with diagnostic or copy tools. There are known issues with several of these listed below.
  1. Disk Fitness Test (DFT) version 3.xx provided by Hitachi GST which uses vendor specific commands on the hard drive. These may not be correctly interpreted since they must pass through the serial to parallel ATA bridge. However, version 4.00 or later of the Disk Fitness Test (DFT) will work.
  2. HDDTEST version 0.28 by Hitachi GST does not function properly for similar reasons. Instead, use HDDTEST version 0.29 or later.
  3. DOS-based copy tools may function slowly or produce incorrect output, specifically previous versions of Norton/Symantec Ghost. These versions are not compatible with the Serial-ATA interface of the Intel ICH6M chip set. Documentation on this problem may be found at www.symantec.com. It is recommended to use either a newer version of Ghost, Norton Ghost 2003 (version 2003.789 or later) or Symantec Ghost 8.0 or later, or to use the -FNI switch when invoking Ghost from the command prompt (For example, Ghost.exe -FNI with the current version of Ghost).
Other disk copy tools and related applications, such as some backup programs, may also have similar behavior. The hard drives shipped in the affected systems will not display the message because they already have firmware that recognizes this new Serial ATA bridge chip. However, a similar drive from an earlier ThinkPad system or an OEM drive might cause the error message to be displayed. Customers may also notice the POST error message after applying a ThinkPad BIOS update if a drive without the firmware update is installed in the system. Some early systems were shipped with a system BIOS version that did not provide this POST error message. Updated BIOS has been released to provide this informative POST error message to users.

Copying a drive image to move your installed software to an other computer

Copying the entire disk image is easy using a program something like Norton's Ghost. If the hard drive is failing, it's pertinent to do this QUICKLY.

DfragFat.exe Application error

I suggest backing up before you do *anything* else. ghost a copy to an external or spare internal hard drive. It sounds to me like your hard drive could be on the brink of death.

Once you get a copy ghosted do a scandisk with the "automatically detect and attempt recovery of bad sectors" checked. I bet it finds some irregularities.

Freecom hard drive problem?

Unless you "GHOST" or "CLONE" the programsd over to the harddrive, instead of just copy and paste, they will not open. What you will have to do mo0re than likely is remove the installation files through control panel and reinstall the program onto the external harddrive.

I have just purchased a 160 gp plug and play and was told i can transfer my games etc onto it and have no idea how

In order to transfer your games to your hard drive, you first need a cloning program that will take all of the game components from your main hard drive and copy them exactly to your slave hard drive. I suggest looking up Norton's Ghost Utility for such applications.
