Question about Linksys Wireless-G WRT54G Router

1 Answer

Occasional signal loss

Suddenly my other 2 computers have been losing the signal from my WRT54G router about once per day even though the host computer is still online. I have to unplug the router for 1 minute each time this happens. Then everything works fine for about a day before it happens again. Any ideas why? Thanks so much for your help

1. RESET both the modem and router by unplugging them from the wall outlet for 30 seconds.
2. Power them ON again, and after 2 minutes check the connection.
3. If not OK, connect a computer directly to the modem, reset the modem and check the connection after 2 minutes.
4. If not OK, check your cables and if these are OK, call your ISP for your status and line quality.
5. IF OK, check the Powersupply of the router.

I had the same Linksys router, and the same issue as well. I continually reset it. Resetting the router would provide better connectivity to my laptop, but it would fail all to soon. I wound up switching routers, and the issue was resolved. I would recommend that you rest the router and see if that helps. If not, then I would recommend a new router.

You can try the steps below and see if it will fix your problem.

1. Log in to your router interface by opening a browser. On the address bar type in http://192.168.1.1. ( this is usually the default address of linksys router)
2. Once you press enter, it will prompt you for a username and password.
Dont type anything on username and enter on the password box, the word admin.
3. Once your inside the router page, Click on wireless tab.
under wireless tab, change the wireless channel to 1, 6, or 11. If the ssid is still linksys, change it to something different. After doing these steps, press save settings. TO save the changes you made.

Keep losing connectivity

What kind of adapter do you have? I was so sick of resetting the thing daily, that I just went and bought another router.

Linksys wireless router has many bugs: connection issues like no connection or constantly having to reset the router. It isn't compatible with many network adapters2.gif. Hope this helps!

Suddenly my router is not recognized ... and occasionally when it is, a password is required, even though I never set one up

You might have pressed the SES (white) button in the front panel of the router. Next time avoid pressing the button because that will change your wireless settings automatically. It will also enable wireless security.

Now the only way to fix this is by resetting the router. Hold the reset button at the back of the router for 20 seconds then unplug the power. Wait for 20 seconds before you plug the power back in.

After that, try to reconfigure the router manually. Using your wired computer, access the router's admin page. Open Internet Explorer and type http://192.168.1.1 on the address bar. This will prompt you for username and password. Leave it blank on username and type admin for the password.

When you get to the setup page of the router, click on Wireless Tab. Change the Wireless Network Name (SSID) to your own name and click on Save Settings at the bottom of the page. Now click on Wireless Security tab. Select WPA-Personal for Security Mode. On the Shared Key or Passphrase box type in your desired password for your wireless network. Take note of it then click on Save settings.

You can now try to connect to your own wireless network. If it prompts you for a network key, that is the password that you just made.

Good Luck and have a great day!

Loss of wireless settings

What you can do is go into your routers settings via 192.168.1.1 and put in the username and password. Go into the wireless tab and change the wireless channel to 8 or somthing. Everyone usually has it set on 6 and this can cause a large problem if there are alot of wireless networks in the area.

Do you have cable TV also? If so, how many TVs are hooked up. Sounds like you have signal loss. I had the same problem. Also, if you have another coax cable lying around, try changing it out (from the wall to the cable modem, cables can be a big issue with this).
