This turn the screen off/on.

To use the two format buttons: Press the "trashcan" format button and hold it. Then press the "mode" format button and hold it. Hold for approx 3~4 seconds. The screen will go blank and display "For" and the number of shots taken on the card. Release both buttons. Then press the "trashcan" again followed by the format button. The screen will go back to normal, except the number of shots indicator, it will display "For". In a few seconds, your card will be formatted.
Although this may not solve your problem, you may have bad CF Card. This is normal. Happens all the time.
Try another card. It should format fine. If it doesnt, take your camera to an authorized dealer/repair shop for maint.
