My disposer was not turning until I hit the reset button, now it clanks and makes lots of noise. Does it need to be replaced or is there something I can do to fix the problem?

Sounds like something in dispoal. Do not turn on.... reach inside and fill cutter blades. They located 180 degrees from each other. Could be something like pebble or such, move fingers. Along exterior to fill for objects. Reset button drops when jammed . Also wrench for turning blades from under disposal is usually located in fake drawer in front of sink which pulled from top will roll down. Insert wrench in center of bottom of disposal an moved and backward to unlock blades. Or will need Alan wrench.

Reset button not working

Try reset button on bottom of disposal.

If reset will not restore functionality, check that unit is getting power, and then check that unit is receiving 80% rated voltage. Replace disposal.

Humming noise when turn on insinkerator badger 5XP, and it is not disposing food. After it is on for a while the reset trips

Your disposal is stuck. Sounds like something either fell in it, or perhaps a bone got inadvertantly tossed in. Do you own an allen wrench set? The garbage disposal did originally come with one, but it usually gets lost. The one that came with it will look like two hockey stick stuck together. In any event, you need one for the fix. There is a hole on the bottom of the disposal, directly in the center. Find the correct size allen wrench and place in this hole. Twist clockwise and counter clockwise until it is free. Once this is done, you most likely will need to hit the reset button on the bottom. Good luck!

KA KAdette 250 - I hit the switch the other day and nothing happened. I checked the circuit breaker - ok. I also checked the small breaker button on the bottom of the disposal. It is at least 12-years old....

12 years is middle aged for an appliance, but the problem is probably one of the garbage disposal big three: a tripped circuit breaker, a tripped reset button, or a jammed disposer. With the breaker turned off, make sure the disposer's shaft rotates freely. On most disposers there's a hole in the bottom middle where you can insert an allen wrench that you're probably find under the sink and rotate the shaft manually to free jams. But, for the love of God, only do this with the breaker turned off and make sure you remove the wrench (or broom handle if you have to go from the top) from the disposer before turning it on. Make sure the reset is pushed down until it clicks if it's tripped, and, since circuit breakers get old and stick, you'll have to turn the breaker all the way off and back on to make sure it's not tripped. If the disposer hums but doesn't turn when you turn it on, check to see if it's jammed. If it turns freely but hums and doesn't start then the starter circuit on the motor is bad. If the breaker and reset button are ok and it doesn't even hum when you turn it on, you'd want to check the disposer to make sure it's getting power. You can find a little electrical reader at walmart for $5 that works like a geiger counter and will beep when it gets close to something that's receiving power. The switch may be worn out, but really the disposer's motor failing is probably the least likely thing. But please get a qualified electrician out there if you don't know what you're doing. There's a reason that it requires a license.

Harmonic Balancer issue

sounds like your balancer may have come apart. it shouldn't move at all. to move it you have to make the crankshft turn. i had this happen on a truck once. it made some strange noises, then it started vibrating pretty bad. i shut it off, took me a while to figure out what it was. most of them are actually 2 piece and have a key slot, (a grove cut in both pieces that a piece of metal sits in to keep them turning at the same time). it sounds to me like you need to replace it. it can take some serious effort & tools to replace.

Garbage disposal quit working. Just hums, won't actually turn. Nothing stuck in it. Was working fine and just quit. Do you have to turn something before you hit the reset button?

There could be something stuck you can't see.
Most disposals come with a tool you can use to rotate the shaft from the bottom of the unit, sometimes an allen wrench will substitute, then hit the reset button on the disposal.

hope this helps

Garbage disposal hum

Hi, Hit the reset again. It sounds like the cutter is lacked up some way. Try using a long wooden spoon ar something simular and see if you ca free up the cutter. If the cutter is free and it still will not work, you will probably need a new disposal. If you are getting no noise after you hit the reset, chack your breakers to make sure there is power to the unit. I hope this helps you. Please let me know if I can assist you further.
