Our Toshiba LCD flat screen TV has a couple of cloudy sections. THe TV is four years old. Could this have been caused by some type of cleaning oil rubbed on the screen? Is there a way to remove it?

If your LCD is less then a year old, it's under manufacturers warranty.
The spots could be dead pixels. This type of failure is not fixable due to the high cost of a new screen, the cost might exceed the price of a new LCD.

You don't specify the model number. Some Toshiba sets have a front protective glass front. If this unit is no loner under warranty, carefully take off the back and you should see a way to release the front bezel and glass from the remainder of the set. Carefully remove the working parts from the front bezel and clean both the ionterior glass surface and the surface of the LCD panel. Use a soft lint free cloth that has been dampened with a solution of soap and water. Please use only a few drops of soap in a quart of water and spray the solution onto the cloth just enough to dampen it slightly.

Let us know how you make out.

Hi
Ah ok, you have liquid spots in your screen.
LCD technology is built on a fine crystal screen with liquid for transmission of colours to produce a picture

It seems like the some crystals are starting to pop whic explains why u have small blotches all over the screen

This can be caused by leaving the TV on for a long time or even exposing the LCD to high levels of heat.

The only way to fix this is replacing the LCD panel but really depends what size the panel is. You may also need a tech to replace it for you if your not familiar with replacing LCD screens

I would say it would cost you about 250 - 300 dollars for the LCD panel and 100 dollars for the tech

Now is it worth fixing, it depends on you.
You could always sell it on ebay as is and buy a new one which i would say is a better solution

Hope this helps

Cheers

It's normal on cheap or badly built tv's.
what model is yours? if you got a sony, lg, westinghouse, polaroid, etc etc etc. than yes its normal. if you have a good brand like a samsung, philips, sharp, or toshiba than its either because its one of the lower line of tvs, or you just got a runt and you should return it. first try googling your tv make and model to see if you find thats a common problem. if it is a common problem, than theres nothing you can really do. next time research tv's first. if its not a common problem return it to the store (if its been 30 days or less) if its been longer than that then call the manufacturer. most tv's come with a 1 year warranty

Hello,
There could be possibly three reasons for this ,They are
1) Possibly a Dirt on the back light diffusers

2)Burns or hot spots on the diffusers or

3) A hard Push on the panel from the front causing the LCD front/rear glass sections to touch and wick together..

THank you...Regards!!...

Yeah well possibly Its a defect which could be caused by the factors which i mentioned already..So if your familiar and Sure to Open it up and clean you can proceed..Just remove the working parts from the front part and clean both the interior glass surface and the surface of the LCD panel..Or if your are not pretty sure about it then you gotta call up a service person or the Toshiba service if you have a warranty...

    Good Luck!!!...Regards!!...

It is the LCD screen damaged

If you have liquid spots inside the screen, this means the LCD display is damaged.
Spots usually increase in size after some times.
Unfortunately there is no way to repair the damaged LCD display, only way to fix the TV is replacing the display.
Part price is usually over $200, depending on size , make and model.
Use the phone number printed on last pages of your manual to get support and have the display replaced.

ll projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Growing Black Spots on Insignia LCD Flat Screen

Hi,

Black dots/spots on an LCD panel display indicates either a dead pixel or a stuck pixel. Alternately, if you press lightly on the black spots and they go bigger/darker, then in some instances, it could be that the frame holding the display has been slightly warped when too strong a pressure was applied when it was being cleaned. Should this be the case then corrective measure would be to disassemble and flatten whatever area was dented. Some have reported success with the use of a suction cup. Perhaps this, this or this might be interest you.

If the unit is still under warranty, please try discussing your concern with your dealer. Though a few small spots are an acceptable norm. Alternately and if the warranty has lapsed, there are companies online that offer LCD replacement kits or will replace/fix your LCD and it would cost you less than the cost of a new screen or TV.

Other than the above, am afraid that your options are rather limited.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

There is white spots on the screen and it is very bright

You have one of two problems. Sometimes both.

Problem #1) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

Problem #2)

Your TV may have a convergence failure. ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

645fba6.jpg
0dcec37.jpg
Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

0667c5f.pngSolution # 2

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses. Its a fairly easy DIY job or you can call in a pro. If you want to do the repair yourself check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, thermal paste, email/phone support, etc.

Big grey/black spot

Is it a fuzzy spot or an actual hard edged black spot?LCD televisions can have a loss of pixel display- most very small. Was the TV hit with something or dropped against something (the screen)?

OR Try this first:
Black box appears on the screen
• Closed-captioning might be on. Check the Analog or Digital Caption option in the Setup menu.

Please let me know if your problem is solved. Thank You.

Philips 55p8342 chassis ptv916

To get a new remote call a local TV service company or you can order directly from the manufacture. The cloudiness of your colors are caused by possibility of two things or both: 1) The mirror and lenses inside your TV need cleaning (use window cleaner & soft cloth) spray liquid onto cloth, 2) The fluid in picture tubes need to replaced. To replace fluid (ethylene glycol) take tubes out of unit, drain fluid, clean fluid chamber, add new fluid. How you can tell if fluid is cloudy? Take off screen assembly look into each light (red, green, blue) the picture should be clear. The red tube, light, is normally okay, so use as referance.
