204451972 Vizio 42

204451972 Vizio 42" Widescreen Plasma has sound but no picture. Repair Center say's it needs a new power supply as they think it took a power surge. They want $475 to fix. That's about 2/3 of what I paid for it. Far more than I want to spend fixing it. Where can I get a replacement power supply and instructions for it's replacement.

I'm in southern CT and prefer not to have to send it off somewhere to get fixed. I would like to fix it myself.

  • cjn316 Aug 23, 2008

I assume a plasma tv has a high voltage power supply for the plasma display and a separate power supply for the rest of the electronics. If that is correct, then the loss of the high voltage PS would cause the display to stop working. Am I off base here? If not, where do I get a high voltage PS for my visio?

    Any other ideas out there?

Its not the problem of power supply board .as the sound is coming.the power supply is not faulty, only something is faulty in power supply board.some of the capacitors would be bulged up or may be slowly bursted in the power supply board .just get it changed by some technician .and also get it checked if any of the tracks on the circuit board is short ,if it is short .just get the tracks completed by the engineer.it will not be too costly.under $150.your power supply is perfect just the capacitor which supports the picture is blown.rate the solution.thanks.

Hi,
I would suggest you not to spend money to repair of your plasma because its parts are not available normally. If you give try to this store, they might be able to provide you required power supply.

If it has sound but no picture it is not a power supply problem , when it is power supply TV does not start, or it turns off by itself going on standby mode, also the fee for a power supply replacement it is far too hight. Probably they quoted a higher fee to cover eventual replacements that on plasma tv can get expensive
Troubles with connectors, and YSUS card can give same problem.
A technician should check if any of the connections to the sources came loose. Check if the video
plug just pulled out a little bit and needs to be re-inserted.

Aside from that, it could be any number of problems. It is impossible to diagnose without putting hands and tester on your tv.

You need to take apart tv, there you will find a bigger PSU board and smaller Ysus cards, check connection to screen.
Ysus can be unplugged and put back.
    The components must be tested.
If you do not have experience in servicing electronics consider doing a call in, it will cost you $80 having a checkup, then you decide if there is to spend more for parts. It is an expensive TV.

Here you can buy parts and service manual if you want DIY. Follow procedures on service manual to test and replace parts.

Plasma Tvs have only one power supply, power then is supplied on different voltage to display and boards.
Rear projection TVs instead need to have an high voltage unit.
When you get sound but no picture on a rear projection, then there is a problem with power supply.
If you get same on plasma, it is usually a bad connector or a faulty pcb.

Vizio JV50P, Made a popping sound, the set remains on with no picture.

Plasma and LCD TV sets are prone to having capacitors in the power supply section fail. This is the most likely cause for the probem you describe. When capacitors fail your will commonly see one or more of the following symptoms.
  • No video, Power light is on or blinking.
  • TV is making a clicking noise.
  • TV takes a while to come on
  • Screen is very dim or flickers.

Again, You can get a power supply repair kit with the parts, detailed instructions, and support from sites such as www.TvRepairKits.com . Or just click here to see more details on their kit.

Here are pictures of capacitors...Notice that the ones below look bloated. They have failed and will need to be repalced.

Vizio television

HI...

If it has sound, it's not the fuses.
Also, make sure that you're running the video into the right connector and that the set has THAT input selected
Most likely the backlight power supply that's failed.
Check with your local TV repair person and see if he can get you a new power supply

Picture fades to black then reappears and repeats fades to black .

Is the sound ok. Yust the Picture. If both dissapear replace power supply board. That is the main big board with the most heatsinks on it. Main power gos from a switch board to main power supply.
