Running Vista Home, camera is not automatically recognized when connected to USB. I have the disc but get an error message when I try to run the install. I don't have the file mentioned elsewhere that need to have semi colons removed. A couple of programs also mentioned elsewhere have fail to recognize the camera. All were mention in the context of Win XP though.
I will get a SM card reader but until I do I was hoping there was something which will work via the USB cable. TIA

The software for your camera is outdated and not supported by the later version of Windows, If Olympus does not have a later version on their website you are out of luck. Windows Vista had a lot of issues. My advice would be get rid of Windows Vista and install Windows XP. It is far better.
If I understand your problem right, the installed Olympus program does not launch (start) when connecting the camera to the computer using the Olympus' USB cable.
1. For the program to start automatically, the camera must correctly being recognized by the computer. Check if this is the case! When connecting the camera to the computer, you should see information shown on the camera's display! 2. If not, try to connect the camera on another USB port, or better another computer to diagnose the problem. 3. If the camera is recognized, you can set an option in the program to autostart the program when connecting the camera to the computer. 4. If it does not help, reinstall the program.
If you mean that, even when you connected the Olympus USB cable correctly, the computer does not recognize the camera? If so, connect the camera to another computer to check if the camera or usb cable or the original computer is causing the problem. Often the computer does recognize the camera as a Removeable USB Device. You can see that when using e.g. the Windows Explorer. If the problem is only, that the installed Olympus software is not started, when connecting the camera to the computer, check the settings of the [ib] software by running it manually. Otherwise re-install the [ib] software.
Instead of putting the card in the computer leave it in the camera and try using the usb cable that came with the camera. After hooking up the cable turn the camera on. If you have vista and are connected to the Internet, Vista should find what it needs and install it. If you don't have Vista, try installing the disc that came with the camera.
im running Vista Ultimate - I get the same problem. Just try to install/re-install the driver. It's how I got it to work, but after every connection you gotta do it again. My guess is this camera isn't Vista certified. You can always buy a memory card and use that for the pictures.
If you have a version of Image Expert from a different camera, printer, or other product, make sure you install the version of Image Expert included on your PhotoPC 3000Z Software CD-ROM and use it when you are connecting to your camera. The correct version is named Image Expert - PhotoPC 3000Z (version 1.8.7).
