Something tells me that you're trying to use a brand new 4GB SDHC card. If so, your camera was designed before SDHC format came out. You'll need to use standard SD cards, those 2gb or less. Search on Amazon for "SD card 2GB". They run about 6 to 7 dollars total with shipping.
For others with similar problems, There are several possible causes for "memory card locked", "memory card error", or "no memory card". The most common is trying to use a 4GB or higher SDHC card with an older camera made before SDHC format came out. Other causes include problems with the tiny slide switch on the side of the card, or the electrical contact switch internal to the camera. The problem may also arise from simple formatting problems if the card has never been formatted in the camera (note that this will also erase the card). Troubleshooting tips for this problem may be found at this link.

Samsung SL202 card error I bought an SD card with adapter and camera says "card error".

Question edited for clarity.

This is always because people buy modern SD Cards that are far too bit for older cameras. The maximum size for an SD Card is 2GB. Also you must format the card inside the camera.

Good big picture and it doesn't matter that it has Canon written on the SD card in the picture the SD card is interchangeable between the two makes.

Now one other thing that may also be the problem is that the SD card needs to be formatted to the camera. Formatting should be done on new memory cards and after you have downloaded pictures to the computer. That's format not delete, delete leaves a mess on the card Formatting cleans the card and provides proper communications between the camera and the memory card

How to format or unformat memory card on IXUSi camera I need to know how to format and unformat the memory card I can't see the pcitures as it is showing no image on the screeen Regards C Robertson

to format a sd memory card, you can insert the card to computer or camera, and select the format. To unformat a sd memory card, a data recovery software can help you.
Are you in a dilemma as to whether to format your SD card or not? If you don't format the SD memory card, you cannot use your SD card any more, and you cannot transfer files from SD card to other devices. If you format the SD memory card, you will loss all the files like photos and videos on your SD card. Follow the link you can get the answer.

SD card problem

here is a list of compatable memory cards
http://www.4allmemory.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=search.memorySearch&model_id=42425
.. any SD or MMC card should work up to 4 gb ... so your 2gb should be ok .. i suspect that it may be damaged .. you can try formatting it in a USB card reader if you have one on your computer .. some laptops have the SD slot built in .. there was some compatability issues with memory cards for older cameras but there shouldnt be any with such a new machine .. make sure the contacts are clean and the "protect" switch (if any) is in the unprotected mode .. when you format the card it may take several minutes so give it time .. if you are going to take movies then its better to use a "high speed" SD card .. like the 133x mentioned in the above URL .. slow memory may cause missed frames or 15 fps instead of 30 fps record rates.. .
the specs on your camera do show SD and MMC compatability .but they dont show any brand preference .. .

Cannot seem to get my camera to work

The specifications on page 25 of the User's Manual state that only SD cards between 8MB and 1GB in size can be used in this camera. When I tried a larger-capacity 2GB SD card in this camera it reported that the card needed to be formatted even though the SD card worked fine in my desktop PC's SD card slot. Verify that the capacity of the SD card you're trying to use is 1GB or less, I suspect the error report about formatting is due to the SD card being larger than the camera can handle.
