I have a Canon S30 digital camera and a Macbook running OS x 10.5.8. I use a San Disk USB card reader to download the images to my computer and when I do, the images look normal when they are at thumbnail...

One thing to remember is that most digital cameras capture an image and a thumb nail, the thumb nail in many cases is a separate file. So the problem can be the camera itself. The other issue is the image editing software you are using and how you are capturing the image? Are you capturing in jpg tiff or Canon Raw? While jpg is the easiest the best quality is with raw. You may need a plug in depending on which program you are using. iphoto is fairly good and you can check the Apple site or the canon site for plug ins for you camera. Download them, restart and see if the problem still exists. Software for Cannon and iphoto are free ( assuming you have ilife). Personally I love Adobe Elements and again check for recent plug ins. Good health and God bless.

Can't download large movie files to iphoto : (

i found the answer to my own question above and thought i'd share.

rather than iphoto, you can use "image capture," which is software that comes standard with the mac.

-Turn on your camera, and connect it to your computer with the cable that came with it.
-Close iPhoto if it opens automatically. Open Image Capture (Applications folder).
-Click Download Some to choose specific items to transfer, or click Download All to transfer all items.
If you click Download Some, choose the items to transfer, and click Download.

By default, Image Capture transfers still images to your Pictures folder, video files to your Movies folder, and music files to your Music folder. To choose another folder, choose Other from the Download To pop-up menu, then click Download Some or Download All.

NEF Image will not open - Macintosh

RAW NEF images from Nikon cameras are proprietary formatted raw data directly from the cameras's sensor. If the images are improperly transferred to the computer they will not be able to be opened and will give an "Unsupported File Format" warning. Macintosh OS X has an "Image Capture" application (found in: Hard Drive/Applications/)that can be used to transfer images. If "Image Capture" is used NEF files will be corrupted and will not be able to be read. Only Nikon View, or manually dragging images from the mounted card, should be used to transfer NEF's. To disable "Image Capture": Double-click to open the hard drive and then the "Applications" folder Double-click "Image Capture" From the "Image Capture" menu choose "Preferences..." In the "When a camera is connected" pop-up choose "No Application" Close the Preferences window and Quit Image Capture After disabling Image Capture, it will not launch when the camera is connected and you can use Nikon View to properly transfer NEF images.
