the specific disk was working fine and the specific desktop has never being connected to the internet.so i think the disk has not being infected from a virus or so.the thing is that i've tried to take the data puting the disk in an external box,but my laptop sees an unknown device and can not understand that is a HHD.i'm looking for the drivers but i can't find any.....

    it's a "seagate barracuda 7200.9 120GB" if you could help....!!! ;)

is there any other way to take the data from the disk??

    thank you very much......

    i'm waiting for your answers....

    Hello,

Assuming you are talking about a fixed hard drive and not a removable media drive such as a compact flash or SD Flash Card in a memory drive bay, then you have a problem with the fixed hard drive and formatting it will not solve the problem and yes you will loose your data.

    You have two options:
    1) Return this to the maker for service under warranty, should it be in warranty
    2) running a diagnostic and recovery tool on your hard drive.

Do you feel or believe you know how this may have occurred? Perhaps a virus infection or operating the system when a power surge, brown out or power drop occurred?

Running a diagnostic and repair tool without some prior knowledge about the nomenclature and terminology used in hard drive construction will limit your ability to run a repair program.

    So,
    a. What manufaturer made your hard drive?
    b. When was it made? (build dates are on the drive label)
    c. Are you comforatable opening your PC, removing a drive and reinserting it later?
    d. Do you have an idea what may have initiated the drive failure: age; power surge; bumping the PC while running; dropping the PC, even just an inch, while it was running?

Honestly, what is your skill level with accessing and replacing internal components of a PC?

    Regards,

Thanks for the prompt reply. Your external hard drive enclosure has one of three cable types to connect to your laptop. Is that USB, Firewiare or eSATA?

You have XP or Vista on your Laptop?

When you connect your external enclosure to your laptop you should hear a tone indicating Windows has recognized a new external storage device. Is this not happening, first of all?

So, give me the cable type used to connect to your laptop and whether Windows recognizes your external storage device with a tone and Alert Pop Up, and then Windows wants to format it because its not seeing the hard drive correctly?

Thanks,
Worldvet

It would be a good idea to run a anti spyware and anti virus to check the drive.

Thanks

My gdhdu is not being detected by my laptop at all, as a new device.

try other usb port, or other computer and see whether the hdd is detected. If still not, try to go to device manager ( http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000833.htm ), and then assign a drive letter to the hdd. After that, try to access it from Computer, if not able to access it, format it (use quick format) and then use asoftech data recovery program to recover your files.

Seagate 750GB usb HDD asks to format, when opening by double click

The disk is either damaged or the USB interface is damaged.
1) You could try opening the external case and connect the disk to your computer directly (Using IDE/S-ATA cables)
2) Format the HD and use data recovery software/service.
