Start / Control Panel / Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options / Regional and Language Options / Languages / Details you probably have "English (United Kingdom)" installed instead of "English (United States)" or vice versa.
It appears that the keyboard layout of your laptop is set to as of UK. You can switch between the US and UK layouts quickly by pressing Alt and Shift keys together. Press the Alt and Shift keys again to switch back to previous layout.
Please rate this solution in case you find it helpful, if not let me know and I shall let you know how to change the layout permanently.
go into control panel and select "Regional and Language" setting and select the correct language keyboard. Usuallt this will be the US keyboard. You appear to have the English UK keyboard selected.
To get a backslash, you need to print the upper ascii character 92 (decimal). On most machines you can get upper ascii characters by holding down the Alt key and typing the decimal value on the numeric keypad. On the little IBM machine I'm typing this on, there is no numeric keypad, but if I switch on numlock (by doing shift-scroll-lock) the j-k-l keys become 1-2-3 etc. Now id I hold down Alt and type 92 (i.e.keys 9-k), this is what I get: \ Howzzat?.
Try changing the language from English(US) to English(UK)
The Yanks have not only a different language - but also a different keyboard layout to us Brits :-)
