Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

My Sony CRT box has started emitting an acrid burning type smell. The picture is fine but there has been some crackles coming out of the speaker.

I can't work out how to get the get the back off the TV. I have taken all the screws out but there are two narrow rectangular slots along the top edge at the back of the TV about 5cm from the each outside edge of the TV. Are these some kind of fixing?

  • jonathan618 Aug 23, 2008

    Hi Nate,

Thanks for your responses. I haven't managed to get the back off but I can now see through the rear panel something that every now and again glows like a burning ember. It's about 5mm long and 0.5 mm wide. Everytime it glows there's a puff of smoke.

The TV is about 20 years old so maybe it's about time I replaced it. I'll probably look for a used CRT because I'm still not convinced by the picture quality of affordable flat panels.

    Thanks, Jon.

Are you able to visually inspect the circuit boards and looked for burnt solder joints or cracked ones. Im assuming since you hear crackles they might be burnt if so you can attempt to remove the solder in place and resolder the joint also look for any bulging or leaking capacitors.

lemme know so i can further assist you.

ok then dont turn it on or try and do anything else then the damage would be visible if you opened it up for service it is probably best to call a technician and have it repaired proffessionally.

When I start the microwave, it has a funny smell

Sounds like you burned out the magnetron, if so you should discontinue use immediately. This is the bit that emits the microwaves and they will fail with a burnt faintly oily smell to an acrid chemical smell. Magneton replacement should not be attempted by the amateur fix-it man, Find a reputable appliance repair shop or chuck it in!

My tv is 5 years old, I smelt a burning smell in the room. The tv turns on then you hear some buzzing and crackling and the tv turns off by its self. the picture does not come on at all Lwithers4@aol.com

Some component has failed inside. Buy something better or pick up another CRT set real cheap. Many people are trying to get rid of them after buying flat panel sets. Not work fixing anymore.

TURNS ON AND OFF IMMEDIATELY . HEARD POPPING AND SMELLED ELECTRICAL BURN BEFORE 1ST TIME

More than likely a burned power supply. The acrid smell is a giveaway for high powered components failing. If it were a conventional CRT type screen, I would suspect the flyback transformer, but LED/LCD type screens will eat a power supply if it has the slightest defect in manufacturing.

Hole burning through floor of Freezer

Your refrigerator is likely a frost free model. There is a heating element that runs around the freezer compartment. It is probably the heating element that is causing the original damage to progress.

Most fridges have a way to turn off the frost free part, usually via the timer or or easy as pulling the fuse for the circuit. Pull the fridge out, climb behind it, unplug fridge, and remove access cover, if equipped. Look for a wiring diagram. It will tell you where you need to disable the frost free at.

If you can't disable the frost free, then replace fridge now. the acrid smoke you smell is toxic, and is detrimental to food, as well as to human life. Stop using the fridge, or disable frost free.

Crackleing

No its not EMI.- I have them too and mine are little over a year old. Have noticed the faint smell of electricial burning. Checked the sub and the amp/pwr supply in there must be slowly breaking down. I cant turn my speakers up past 25 percent volume and the crackling/hum gets very bad, We should all be looking for replacement at this point.

Arking and noisey compressor startup. can smell a burning odor after restart

sounds like a bad overload relay assy for your compressor, its attached to the side of our compressor assy if that is what making the noise heres the part number 12002784. but if its burnig and arcing enought o ruin the compressor terminals you may need a new compressor, and depending on when purchased may or may not be covered. new overload relay comes with new compressor if needed

Burning smell

Hi. What does the burning smell of? Is it 'rubbery', or is it acrid and 'chemically'?! The most common item to 'burn' is the belt which drives the rotating brush at the front. Does your cleaner have a belt? This would give a burning rubber smell. The instructions should explain how to change the belt - have a close look and see if the belt has been slipping on the motor spindle. If it has, then it'll probably be worn at this point and should be replaced. A common cause of this happening is the brush bar getting caught in something - edge or rug, etc - and being forced to a standstill. If the smell is more 'acrid', it could be a problem with the motor. This is a repair service job.
