Since you didn't give a model number, I don't know if it is frost free or not. If it is, then you have a problem with you defrost system: defrost heater, thermostat or defrost timer.

It also sounds like your door seal is not making solid contact and most air is leaking into the freezer.

If your unit is a frost free, then water should drain down and out.

Not freezing enough

You might have ice building up on your evaporator coil. That ice serves as an insulator and prevents the internal freezer temps from going down to design parameters. The ice buildup is caused by the defrost mechanism not working - check the timer or the defrost heating element.

Icing up

I've just had a similar problem. I fixed it by removing the large panel on the back of the inside of the freezer. I found a large build up of ice at the bottom of the freezer which seems to have developed because the drain hole at the bottom of the freezer was blocked. I defrosted the ice, cleared the drain and now the freezer is working fine.

Drain plug freezes up and ice builds up in freezer then leaks into frig. How do you keep the drain free from building up?

Use a turkey baster filled with very hot water and flush it several times. That should resolve the problem. Also check the door gasket, if it is leaking, excessive frost would be visible causing more water then the system was designed to handle.
Good Luck,

GE Freezer Not Freezing

I am not an expert, but if the defrost heater is not working, then maybe when it was unpluged the coils didn't completly unthaw. If not, the freezer still will not cool properly.

Defected DEFROST HEATER can cause frost build up on the panel at the back of the freezer, and freezer stop cooling and ice frozen on unit so air could not flow to refrigerator side.Water will coming out caused of unbalanced freezing, and causing the flooding of water in the floor. Ice build up in my frost free upright freezer

I looked at the BACK at the bottom underneath of my Sears Kenmore frost free upright freezer and what was causing the ice buildup was very simple. At the factory, the assembler looped the little hose too high and when the water went into the hose it could not get out due to being too high in one spot! An ice dam will form, blocking ALL water coming through
and freezing up any more water coming down giving you a HUGE wad of ice that is scary!!! I just removed the screw holding the loop that holds the hose and put a bit of warm water down the little hole on the INSIDE (Behind the grate) to melt the remaining ice in the tube. You need to take out 4 screws and remove the grate to see this. I could not believe that this was the problem! I haven't had any ice build up since. Now don't tear your freezer apart before you try this trying to fix the compressor, thermostat etc. It may be the only thing wrong with it!
