    My tomtom suddenly re-booted it self and keeps looping through the set-up screens - it gets as far asn selecting the voice and locks up, then eventually loops back to re-start the install again..>!!!!

    can anyone help?

    it just started today after I went on line and downloaded the new GPS Quickfixes. Now when ever I turn it on, it will shutdown and start up agian after about 3 mins. Then it just keeps going through the setup screens and most of the time will not find a good signal.

    After 2 years, my Tom Tom is not reading my card and keeps asking me to insert the sd card. Why? is it their way to get us to buy a new Tom Tom?

    I just opened the box and updated the software... again, with no warning, it just reboots after letting me select a voice... very disappointing. I won't recommend TomTom.

    Bought a One XL a month ago. Updated firmware and maps. Worked fine for a week. Not used for 2 weeks. Now goes through setup as far as selecting voice, hangs, then reboots. Awaiting reply from TomTom. My guess is a corrupt file like any other modern computer! Nothing a restore from backup or a complete rebuild won't fix.

    exactly the same problem, device worked fine for years, recently updated the software and used the tomtom for two weeks, then stopped using it for a while and now its broken.

    Same Problem - installed new software now unit reboots every 3 minutes or so, recalculates route that was deleted.

    Same here. After a couple days of starting to use my ONE XL S. For some reason, just after the load screen, it flashes a file access error then starts to navigate, then after a couple of minutes starts to reboot itself continuisly. this all started after trying to install updates from Tomtom home, stopped halfway through downloads with server issues, try again later senario. had to get a Garmin Nuvi in the middle of a road trip. No response from tomtom support yet, after a couple months of trying to contact them, very disappointed. loss of 229$ in my opinion. what do you do?

Here is a solution that worked in my case (constant reboots after voice select)

  1. Plug your tomtom into your PC.
  2. Run TomTom Home
  3. Select the option to run your TomTom through your PC (TT Home)
  4. You should be greated with the select language screen
  5. Then simply select language etc.
  6. When you get to the voice selection: select a voice (here TTHome should freeze) <- also strangely enough notice the cancel button doesn't on the screen (as it does when doing this on the device)
  7. Don't panic TT Home should start working again in a few seconds
  8. Disconnect your TomTom and that should have solved the problem, the normal map screen should show up upon starting up your TomTom
This solved the issue for me, hope it does for you good luck!

Hello Everyone!

My TomTom suddenly starting going through the setup all over again but when I tried to choose the language it would just freeze and restart.

I found this article on the tomtom site and tried it and it worked.

Part 1: Remove the current application Tomtom keeps rebooting by itself - ico_open.gif

1. Reset your device.
2. Connect your device to your computer using the USB cable or dock.
3. Turn on your device by pressing the power button for 5 seconds.

  • Your device should automatically connect to the computer upon reset. If your TomTom device asks you if you want to connect to your computer, tap YES.

4. Run TomTom HOME.
5. In the Main Menu of HOME click on Remove items.

2352_02_us.gif 7. You will be prompted with the following warning message. Choose Yes.
8. Click on Remove selected items.
9. You will see a prompt, confirming the number of items you're going to delete. Choose OK.
10. You will be asked to copy the item to your computer before removing, do not copy the item. Instead, deselect the checkbox home_checkmark.gif next to the application and click on Continue.
11. The application will then be removed. Click Done when complete.

Part 2: Reinstall the TomTom Application

1. Tomtom keeps rebooting by itself - vista_25.gifomTom HOME.
2. Locate the Download folder in the following location on your computer:

xp_25.gifWindows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents\TomTom\HOME vista_25.gifWindows Vista: C:\Users\<username>\Documents\TomTom\HOME Macintosh: Macintosh HD/<username>/Documents/TomTom/HOME/
3. Rename this folder to 'DownloadOLD'.
  • For Windows, right-click the folder and choose Rename.
  • For Mac, select the folder and choose mac-command.gif+ I. Change the name of the folder under Name & Extension.
4. Restart TomTom HOME.
5. Download and reinstall the latest application through HOME. For assistance with this process please see:

I tried GT3RS's Best solution, and to my amazement it started to work! will have to test it on the road though. Before it wouldn't calculate navigation, just shut down and reboot. After testing some routes out, it seemed to work. It also saved settings and changes that it wouldn't do before either.( Before it Just flashed the " unable to access file " alert ) I think this is the easiest solution that seems to work and i've tried everything! Was ready to throw it away! give it a try, it only takes a few minutes. What do you have to lose?

Hi I have a TT XL IQ Routes that started rebooting after an unplanned disconnect from my PC. When looking at the files on the device using Windows Explorer I found a number of corrupted files, indicating a damaged FAT (File Allocation Table) these files could not be deleted or repaired. To resolve this I carried out the following: (1) Locate a 'Good' file backup of the device, made prior to the device causing problems! If you do not have one, you have a problem and will need to contact your dealer. (2) Connect the device to the PC via the USB lead, (3) I used Achronis Disk Director to format the device to FAT 16. (4) Copy the backed up files to the device. (5) Safely disconnect the device. (6) Reboot.....Job done. OK it's not for the faint hearted but it will resurrect your TT, the moral of the story is ALWAYS backup your device.

The switching off problem can be generaly be attributed to 3 causes:

  1. Battery is not being charged enough ( charging via USB from a PC will take days ) your charger could be putting out the correct voltage but not enough current.
  2. The battery is on its way out. TomTom batteries have a set lifetime where they gradualy take less and less charge. if your battery capacity is low then you might just have enough power in it to allow the TomTom to start up but then it shuts down again shortly after. ( You can check this becuase if powering the tomtom via a power supply the tomtom should remain switched on ). If this is the case , then it probably proves the battery is the problem.
  3. Faulty software ( very possible ) . I have found that where certain files are corrupted on the SD card the TomTom will shut down at some point in the loading up cycle. The reasoning being that if the TomTom cannot procede with boot up , it will either hang or shutdown or load up incorrectly.
If you made a backup of your SD card then formatting and reloading the files from your PC might cure the problem.

This is normal, this come straight of the satellite. To speed up process or bypass, reboot system. To Manually reboot this model, turn unit off like normal. Then when turning on, keep button down as it fires up, DO NOT release on button, keep it down until all fires up and even about 10 seconds passed, then let go. This reboots it and cleans up a lot of ****. Thanks Mike. Please if this helps, please give me 4 thumbs up, to help me and others.

Where is the reset button on the tomtom 125 se

The on/off switch is the reset button. Hold the on/off switch down for 20 seconds for a soft reboot and 30 seconds for a hard reboot.

If you search for "TomTom turns itself on", you will find that there appears to be a problem which TomTom will not acknowledge. Mine always turns itself back on exactly (to the minute) one week after being switched off and runs the battery down. Tomtom have got me to reformat and had it back for repair but the problem remains

Looying to update maps

Get the latest version of TOMTOM HOME
Install it and run the program.

Now with your GPS tunred off connect it to your computer via a short USB lead.

Now switch on the GPS and clikc yes when t asks if you want to connect to a computer.

TTH will now start up and from there you can update the tomtom itself.

Tomtom 510 doesn't reset

Before you keep resetting your tomtom I would intall a new battery. Call your closest "batteries plus store" or "radioshack store" and then try to reset it, it might be only the battery and nothing to do with the reseting.....

Connect to computer

Unfortunatly , I don't think your problem can be solved without further investigation as it is most likely that something is loose or possible you have a bad solder joint inside your tomtom. The vibrations when travelling are allowing the fault to manifest itself at that particular time. the fault is such that for a moment , the TomTom thinks it has been connected to a PC due to a small voltage spike caused by the faulty connection. Of course this is only my theory and not a definative diagnosis , This is why I think it will need proper investigation. However, it is also possible for the software or cetrain files to have a bug in it that can also show itself in this way on your particular device so if you made a backup of your tomtom hard drive some time earlier you could at least reload this backup to see if this cures your problem. So, if you are able to format and reinstall the files to your hard drive and this cures it , please me me know. .............. good luck.
