Kenmore 73954 : Only runs when the START button is continuously pressed

My 4 yr old dryer suddenly gave this problem. It runs only when I hold the START switcgh in hold position by keep it pressed with finger. is it START button problem?. Please suggest. I checked fuse, they seems to be good. My 4 yr old Kenmore Elite Dryer sounds to have the same problem as the Kenmore 73954 listed on your web sit, however my dryer is electric. The dryer only runs when I hold the START button down. Once I release the button it no longer runs. I need to know what the problem may be in order to provide the correct information for repair.

I have the same problem with my Kenmore Elite. The repairman told me it needs a new motor and he will order it today. He is charging me for $325.00 for parts and labor. But, when I read some of the posted problem here I might need a heat board. Please advise! Thank you for your help and I wish I found your website before I called the repairman.

    Thanks,

The start button starts the motor heater and energizes a relay that latches closed to keep the motor and heater running untill the timer switch or door switch cut the power to the relay and the relay opens.
The latching relay has failed or disconnected
if all the cables are attached to the relay
replace relay
not an expensive item, usualoly good for 10years
dryer circuits look like this, the start switch and relay are drawn just to the right of the motor, this diagram has no relevance to the physical position of the parts

My start button on my gas dryer

That is VERY DANGEROUS.............I would NOT recommend doing that under any circumstances.........it could be a safety device that is keeping the start button from working in order to keep it from shorting out.............

also, it could be the start button itself but, it is not worth the chance that it could catch fire.

Kenmore 90 series, 7 years old, no problems til now. all of a sudden, 3rd load of laundry of the day, press start button, nothing happens. There's power to the unit as the light goes on when the door...

That doesn't mean there's power to all parts of the dryer though. My Kenmore used to run but not heat & invariably a wire was burned through at the end - they get brittle after a while. I'd unplug the dryer - very important - open the back & look for a wiring problem. I could usually shorten the broken wire & make a good connection again. After years of patching it up we gave up we got a new dryer.

I pushed the start button on the dryer it turned on but didnot st

The instant you press the button on the console, the motor should start. When it starts a mechanism in the motor operates a switch mounted on the motor (provided w/new motor). That makes a circuit which replaces the action of your finger holding the button by creating a bypass circuit. This bypass circuit takes the start switch completely out of the circuit and keeps the motor running.

Your motor is not making this bypass circuit and needs to be replaced.

Press start button and dryshuts off when start button is released

There is a switch assembly on the motor that activates when the motor is running. Centrifugal switch. It keeps it running when you release the switch. That is where to start. Eric

Must hold start button to run. no heat

disconnect power and remove lid. Test the door switch w a volt meter do so opening and closing the door not pushing switch if circuit stays open try pushing switch with finger. If pushing closes circuit then adjust switch. If circuit stays open replace switch. If switch operates with no problems then it is the motor. Check all connections and vacuum lint from motor

psrao, right next to the timer under the consol is the even heat board. When this fails, it will cause this problem. This has been an issue with this model. Part number for the board is 3978949. Catriver..post back.
