When I plug in my mouse, ext. HD, and/or printer to any of my USB ports, I get a message that says "Unknown device." They all worked last week, but now they don't! I even did a system recovery from a restore point, and after that had no help, I used the restore CD, but that didn't work either! Pls help!!!

well, only way is to flash your bios.

it should be bootable flash bios tool that will assist you to remove all the current settings to the original settings. but if you can get the memory flash for toshiba then try running the system in safe mode the see if your usb devices can function then you try booting the system with cd/dvd drive. it should work

One of two USB drives wont recognize anything

Files on a flash drive can be corrupted if it is not removed from the USB port properly.
Before removing the flash drive click on the Safely Remove Hardware icon and then click on the flash drive you want to remove and then remove the flash drive when the computer message says it is Safe to remove.
To restore the flash drive you may need to format the flash drive, but you will lose the data stored on the flash drive.
If you need the data on the flash drive these WEB sites may help: -

Usb device not recognize

You mentioned that you uninstalled the unknown device from the Device manager. If you uninstall it then connected your usb flash drive you will see an error again on your device manager. This means that the driver for your usb port is not properly installed.

To install it, visit dell website, look for the model of your machine and locate the driver, download it then install from your machine.

My usb ports do not recognize my zip drives. They do recognize my ipod, camera, mouse, etc. I have a Toshiba Satellite A135-S2276 with vista, just upgraded to 2GB ram. Thanks for your help

Ok,

thanks for the clarification.

If the Ipod, which is essential a flash drive, works direct to the USB but the flash drive doesn't it's actually more likely that the flash drive has failed than any of the other possibilities. So, that being said, the next step is to plug the flash drive into a different computer and see if it works there. If it does let me know as there may be a driver problem on your computer, if it doesn't the flash drive has likely failed. If it has failed and there is nothing crucial on it, buy a new one they're inexpensive, if there is crucial data on it let me know and I will get you the contact info for a data recovery facility in your region(need to know your regoin as well). Regions being, North America, South America, Europe, etc.

Try this next step and let me know whether it works and I can advise you either way,

Chris

no its not the problem with your vista , its the problem with usb flash drive, sometimes your antivirus program prevent it from reading the flashdrive because of some virus on it.
