I have an Epson Perfection 2580 Photo Scanner. The red light is flashing. I've checked all the connections, changed cables, changed USB ports, and it still is flashing. Epson says that it's a fatal error caused by a locked transportation lock, a florescent lamp that needs to be replaced, a scanner malfunction and/or that an optional device connected to the scanner is malfunctioning. I know it is not the transportation lock or the malfunction of an optional device. Sending it to an authorized dealer will cost more than replacing the scanner. Does anyone have any other ideas before I toss the thing? Many thanks for a reply.

I don't know what scanner you are talking about. I cannot find anything on the left or right hand side of the scanner. The transportation lock is in the back and it's a cable lock. I also couldn't find the transportation lock on the bottom left hand side when I lifted the lid. Are you sure you are referring to the Epson Perfection 2580 Photo Flatbed Scanner? If so, please tell me where these things are that you are referring to in your response.

This must be an Epson page for newer Perfection scanners. It doesn't apply to mine. I already went to the Epson site. That is why I contacted FixYa. It sounds like there is not fix for it and I have to take it to an authorized dealer or buy a new one. Would that be your take?

Please follow the steps below to resolve your issue:
1.Turn off the scanner.
2.Disconnect the USB or Firewire cable from the back of the scanner.
3.Disconnect the Accessory Interface cable from the back of the scanner.
4.On the left hand side of the scanner, you will see a transportation lock. Use a coin or similar flat object to lock and then unlock. Repeat this 3 times, ensuring the lock is back in the unlock position when finished.
5.Lift up the lid to the scanner. On the bottom left hand side, you will see a transportation lock that slides horizontally. Toggle this 3 times, ensuring that it is back in the unlock (left) position when finished.
6.Reconnect the USB\Firewire cable and the Accessory Interface cable and turn the scanner on.
7.If the error is cleared, please try scanning and all should be well.

Epson v500 Photo scanner was working but now gives a red light and whirring noise when opening the app installed on Mac - gives warning "cannot properly connect with scanner".

Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try for your Epson V500 Photo scanner: Check the connections: Ensure that your scanner is properly connected to your computer and turned on. Check the cables and ports for any damage or loose connections. Restart your computer: Sometimes, restarting your computer can fix communication issues between your scanner and computer. Reinstall the scanner software: Try uninstalling and reinstalling the scanner software on your computer. You can download the latest software from the Epson website. Check for updates: Make sure that your scanner software and computer operating system are up to date. Try a different USB port: Plug the scanner into a different USB port on your computer and see if it makes a difference. Reset the scanner: Turn off the scanner and unplug it from the power source. Wait a few minutes and then plug it back in and turn it on. If these steps don't resolve the issue, it's possible that there may be a hardware problem with the scanner that needs to be repaired.

Epson perfection 2580 scanner will not start. Programs installed w/cd. Epson updates added. Just says" scanner can not start"

The first thing to try: a new USB cable and a different port. (If you are using a hub, try directly connecting to the computer). What does the device manager say about the scanner? (In Windows, access from the Control Panel > Hardware. Exact directions depend on the OS version.)

Check the transport lock on the bottom of the scanner - do not put the scanner on its side when you check the lock.

Make sure the scanner was on and had already warmed up (stopped blinking) before you tried to start the scanner software (either by the buttons or from the scanner). You may want to reboot the computer (in case the computer thinks one program has locked access to the scanner).

I hope this helps.

(scanners require two-way communication with the computer and a bad cable will stop the scan even when the computer sees the scanner and the software installed without a problem.)
