Question about i-mate Cell Phones

1 Answer

Hi, I have an i-Mate Jam PDA/phone. The phone was not charged for over 1 week and both the main and backup batteries went flat. Although I could charge the main battery via and external device, I could not charge the backup battery without removing it from the phone. With both batteries now fully charged (tested on volt meter), the phone starts and performs the initial install. However, once the power button is pressed to turn off the device it will not restart. When this happens, no charging light comes one if external power is inserted and the only way that I can get the phone to turn on again is to remove both main and backup batteries, wait a couple of minutes and then re-insert them. Now, it's not a trivial procedure to get the backup battery in/out of the phone and I've carried out this procedure twice now and am concerned that I'll break the plastic clips if I keep doing this? Seems to be a common problem as I've seen many threads on different forums, but I've not seen a resolution to this problem. Can you help?

hi thanks for using fixya!

I recommed that you bring your Imate PDA to a service technician to check further the error. It is not a good sign, especially if there is a problem with the back up battery.

The phone is not recognizing the backup battery. can someone please help me on how to charge or replace the backup. battery

The backup battery is located inside the phone and canno be replaced by normal methods. the phone needs be disassembled and the battery are solded on the board.

the lifetime of these bateries are very high, maybe 5 or more years, and the charge occurs every time when you charge the phone.

Try to leave your phone charging for more than 3 hours, and if the battery dont charge, try a master reset on it.

If ater all, the battery dont charge, maybe you make some mistake or shorted some circuit. Take apart your phone again and re-check all the steps to reassembly.

Good luck

My i -mate k-jam restart suddendly, even if have full charge, specially when have a phone call, i made a hard reset and follow the trouble....help

hi thanks for using fixya!

If you have already made a hard reset and still you are still experiencing the same problem. I suggest that you remove the battery and install it back again. Then turn on the power, then try to call someone. But if still the same, I suggest that you should bring your pda to a service center to further check the error.

The battery for my imate jam windows mobile 2003 goes off even when the indicator shows 60%

hi thanks for using fixya!!

How many years now is your I-mate? Normally, we need to change batteries every 1 year, especially if we are using much of our PDA. I suggest that you should change for a new battery, but if the problem still comes, better check with your tech guy to see software and hardware status.

Thanks! have a nice day!! don't forget to rate my solution positively.

How does one know when the battery on a PDA is too old? What are signs beyond the battery meter?

Try updating your rom through imate's official site. You would propably have to register your device first.

HARD RESET PROCEDURE
hold down the power button and push the reset. You don't have to use a paper clip if you've styles fits, but don't use anything sharp, such as a safety pin. This should return your PDA to the way it came from the box.
before that backup ur all data

Stops while talking

Hi folks with aging JAMS. My JAM is still dying (complete shutoff) using phone. I wish it would just lose the phone signal but my unit shuts off completely during phone calls. I can have 80% charge. I spoke with a friend that mentioned on his cell phone (different manufacturer) that although his battery will show a full charge or less, the time it takes for the charge to go down is ridiculously fast once the battery is old. He watches his phone lose a charge in under an hour though it charges to full.

I wish IMATE would make some formal post regarding when to get a new battery and what symptoms are possible. I'm a bit hesitant to invest in batterys if the issue is hardware. I use the unit alot--as a PDA, a phone, etc. It gets jostled about so maybe something is lose inside, though I doubt it.

I purchased a cheap phone charger so in the car I'm recharging and at work I just keep a cheap USB to plug charger. I reserve the phone when I'm out. This is not really optimal for cell phone use but it's a behavioral fix. I figure I should be looking at a new device (despite high prices) soon.

I did a full discharge/charge cycle or two or three but only noted short term benefit. At some point the quirky behavior returned and off went the PDA cell with the 80% charge. I see dots of us around the net. Again my Jam is probably 3 years old this March.

IMate JAM battery drained off

When I bought my Imate I had the same problem. Put the charger on it and leave it for an hour or so and check the results. Just so the backup battery gains charge.

Loss of data when battery goes dead?

-are all pda's this way? All PocketPCs are this way. I don't own a P**m so I can't speak to them. -When the main battery depletes to the point where the unit shuts off how long do you have before data is lost? Until the backup battery dies. -Is the backup battery just used when changing main batteries or does it take over when the main battery goes dead? If so how long do you have before it is dead? I've never had it happen, so I cannot say how long, but if you continue to try to use the PDA on the backup battery it won't be long (minutes) if it even lets you do that. The backup is there to bridge over battery changes and to act as a safety net if you run the main batteries totally flat. -does the backup battery recharge or does it have to be replaced? Replace. -with a fully charged unit how long can it be left off before data is lost? Depends on the machine. Most of us leave the thing in the charger overnight every night, so this issue doesn't come up. You could try an experiment for 1, 2, 3 days, looking each day at the battery remaining and work up an estimate. I would expect maybe a week or more. Remember, even "off" the machine is still drawing power to maintain the RAM memory.
