I keep getting a communication error when I connect my SD870 to the computer. I completely uninstalled the canon software and reloaded. Still having problem. I can't find my Canon USB cord but using one...

Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program.

Connection

There could be a number of problems...
  • Your USB cord is faulty
  • A problem with your memory card
If replacing the cord won't work and if the problem persists you might think about buying a card reader so you'll have to remove your card from the camera and insert in into the reader which is then connected to the computer, that usually always works. Its annoying but its not that bad. Plus card readers aren't that expensive: only about $10+
