Carefully! Don't spray anything directly onto the scanner glass. Mist a lint-free cloth with water and gently, very gently, wipe the glass. If you are just removing dust, this will work. If there are other 'things' on the glass, then you need to go a different route. If there are gooey or gummy things on the glass, use Goo Gone in the same manner as with the water above, but use VERY LITTLE as it can smear. You want to make sure that you don't scratch the glass. When you are done, use canned air or even a hair dryer to blow off any excess 'stuff' that you may not be able to see with the naked eye.

Solution two: Clean the scanner glass and scanner lid
If the scanner glass or the white underside of the lid has fingerprints, smudges, lint, dust, or other debris, this can slow performance and affect copy and scan quality. To resolve this issue, clean the product. Before you begin, gather the following materials:Several clean, soft, lint-free cloths

Mild glass cleaner
CAUTION: Use only glass cleaner to clean the scanner glass. Do not use cleaners that contain abrasives, acetone, benzene, or carbon tetrachloride. These substances can damage the product. Avoid isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) because it can leave streaks on the glass.

  6. Clean the glass strip next to the scanner glass with the lint-free cloth. Figure 5: The glass strip
  7. Dry the scanner glass and the glass strip thoroughly with a clean, dry cloth or chamois to prevent spotting, and then dry the white underside of the scanner lid.
NOTE: Do not use paper-based wipes or tissues that can leave fiber residue.
  8. Clean the white underside of the scanner lid. Figure 6: The underside of the scanner lid
  9. Close the scanner lid.

  11. If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button (c01602202.gif ) to turn it on.
  12. Try to copy, fax, or scan again.
  • If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.
Solution three: Clean the automatic document feeder (ADF) Use the following steps to clean the automatic document feeder. Step one: Clean the ADF rollers and separator pad

When trying to copy or scan on my HP Photosmart C4400 printer I recieve a large black line down the document. This only happends when using the scanner.

Hi,
THERE IS A DUST PARTICLE LODGED ON THE PIECE OF GLASS ON THE SURFACE SCANNING SECTION OF YOUR SCANNER. The scanner section has a long 8 1/2 inch or longer piece of glass that is about 3/4 of an inch wide. Clean the piece of dust or whatever off of it and the line will go away.
I normally use a cotton swab with alcohol on it and get it off .
Good Idea is to clean the whole piece of glass off from time to time.
I hope this has been a help to you.
Best Regards,
Mark

How do I get the platen glass off of my M20i? Either it is stuck or I'm doing something wrong. I need to clean the under side of the glass. Can anybody help?

1. Remove the Document Feeder
2. Remove the Doc Scanner
3. Find the hooks on the Doc Scanner to the right and left to separate the glass frame from the plastic scanner housing.

That should give you access. Best of luck.

Clean glass on MP830?

Best left alone this one, even printer technicians dont remove glass on the scanner unit they just replace the whole scanner assembly, the reason? there are a lot of plastic clips holding it together and springs and cables that are easily dislodged,

often the improvement in scan quality isn't as great as one would think.
the scanner assembly can be replaced as a unit for around $200

I don't know if this is relevant, but Sergy C. had a "Best Solution" to a similar problem on his Mar 11, 2008 post at

He found the scanner head was looking for a mark and that the black paint had flaked off. In his case, the motor was looking for an optic guide line.
