Same problem here on a Travelmate 2420 (2428WXMi to be specific). Problems started right after warranty expired. I am able to extend the time it takes before shutdown by lowering the CPU frequency using Acer ePower-tools (the green icon in systray). If I create a new profile and set CPU to the lowest level (this clocks down the Pentium M CPU from 1700mhz to 800mhz), the computer runs light software pretty well. I also set the other settings to their lowest value to keep it as cool as possible. Safe mode is useless as the CPU runs on full speed when the ePower-drivers aren't loaded. This is a serious problem that I insist Acer needs to help us with!

The fans could not be sped up using either BIOS nor SpeedFan.
The sensor SpeedFan could read was the hard drive sensor.
I don't think there exists any BIOS-upgrade as of 2008-11 that fixes this.

It could also be the CPU "heat sensor" causing a "thermal" shutdown.
Try a hairdryer on cold blow, and point it in where the CPU cooler is!

see does the laptop stay on longer. Thermal paste dosen't usualy "go" unless the heat sink has be detached from the CPU.

I think as you say either the fan or I think the heat sensor.

Got an ACER 7530G with a thermal isue. After some time it shuts immediately down. Seems to be a thermal processor problem. Fan is running, no dust inside. Processor temperature is between 52deg. C and 66...

If the fans are spinning then you need to take off the heatsink and ensure that there is paste between the heatsink and the CPU (its a golden or silver color normally). If not, go buy thermal paste.
If there is paste, then the heatsink was not placed properly on top of the CPU. Even if 3 corners are properly inserted and only one is not properly done, this can certainly cause overheating.

Over heating laptop shuts down

What is happening is that the processors thermal shut down safety is activating. Cleaning the fan and vents was a good first step but there is something else that needs to be done in order to make sure the processor is not overheating. First, make sure the fan is running at all times. If it is for the duration you're observing and the laptop is still shutting off, then the problem may lie at the heatsink-processor interface. This is where the heatsink sints on the processor face and has a thin layer of thermal paste between the two. If there has been a breakdown in the thermal paste and it is not doing its job, then you can have a thermal shutdown.
Now, the nice thing about your system is that you can clean the heatsink fan and grills just by taking off the bottom panel. Unplug the wiring harness for the fan and unscrew the heatsink off the processor slot. Clean the surfaces well with alchohol and let dry, then apply a very thin layer of thermal paste to the heatsink, screw it back down on the processor. Now leave this panel access door off while you power the system back up, that way you can easily observe what is going on in this area. Make sure to use good clean compressed air from an pffice supply chain to blow out all vent and compartments. Do not use the sir while the system is powered on just in case some condensation escapes from the can.. Good luck, below is the link to the service manual for that laptop. An illustrated guide of the disassembly starts on page 70.

I'm replacing a fan and thermal unit

No, not necessarily the entire unit. Once you remove the chassis cover, the harddrive, optical drive & its fan, then you will see that the processor is covered with the heat sink or another term for it is thermal unit. You will not remove the entire motherboard of this laptop since the thermal unit is placed above the processor wherein the processor is placed at the center part of the motherboard. Another option is you can go to for manuals or you can call the acer tech support for more tech assistance

This sounds like an over heating problem, your laptop shuts down as a safety measure. The only solution for this is to have a professional service the unit.

Acer Travel mate 7730 os xp laptop shuts down

make sure processor fan is working fine. you may hear the sound of fan on the left side of the laptop. and make sure its not getting heat soon. If the fan is not working you need to replace the fan. If if gets heat soon that means you have to put processor cooling paste.IF the fan is working fine and the processor heat is normal, then you need to re-fix the RAM. Then it will work fine..ok

Gateway 7405 GX Fully shuts down at random intervals

It sounds like a thermal shut down when the processor over heats, one thing it might be is that the heat sink is not seated properly on the processor. When removing the heat sink make sure you have thermal paste to place between the processor and heat sink. That should give you a good starting point.
