The IDE cable or the power cable are not connected. Also may be it is acting up due to master/slave problems. Pull out the jumper and put it into CS mode. CS means cable select. Try it and let me know..

Toshiba satellite l750-16l "a disk read error occurred"will a new hard drive fix

You hard drive is missing from the system. Or, just does not recognize it. The obvious - Remove any USB devices like drives and any media from disc player. Its trying to load, but can't find bootable hard drive, CD, or USB... Remove the hard drive and reseat (reconnect). Check BIOS by pressing an F key during boot. Look on the screen for correct Function key. Might be F2 key. Verify BIOS recognizes the drive. It must be listed! There is no going forward if it's not. Check boot order and make internal hard drive first. Save and restart.

Not seeing new hard disk or reading XP cd-rom

It can use any 31/2" IDE hard drive. 30 Gb should be OK
If the BIOS cannot detect the hard drive or the CD drive then the drives maybe faulty or the disk controller in the computer is faulty.

I got a hard dish read error..

A hard disk read error is normally an indication of a failing hard drive. If you can, back up any important data because you will most likely need to replace the hard drive.

Most likely you will need a new hard drive installed. Hard drives come blank, so you will need an OS installed on it as well if you get the new hard drive.

It is sayingpri master disk s.m.a.r.t.status bad back up and replace . and wen i try to boot it is saying fileootcd status;oxc000000f.info an error occuredwhile attemting to read the boot configuration...

This error is indicating a physical problem with your hard disk drive or occasionally with the hard disk drive controller.
The S.M.A.R.T. status error means that there is a physical problem - not a windows installation problem.
The second error you are getting during start-up is secondary the the hard drive problems. The system cannot read some of the information on the hard drive. The area is cannot read contains necessary operating system information.
You need a new hard drive for this computer. If it is still under warranty then call or email Gateway support so that they can send a replacement drive. If not then you will need to purchase a new drive. If a new drive does not solve then problem then the problem is on the motherboard.
You did not specify which model laptop this is. Most of Gateway's laptops have built-in cdrom drives, but a few do not. The systems that do not will accept an external cd-rom drive, and should have been shipped with an external cd-rom drive so that it can be reloaded. You will need a cdrom drive to load your operating system onto your new hard disk drive once you replace it.

I purchased a Western Digital EIDE 320GB hard to replace existing Toshiba 100GB hard drive. I cloned the old hard drive using Acronis software from Western Digital and when I placed the new hard drive in...

I have the same problem with my laptop. Here is my understanding of the problem.

Many laptops have a BIOS limit of 128GB hard drive capacity.
Try to find the latest BIOS available for the laptop, and see if it supports 48-bit LBA addressing of the hard drive.
If the BIOS only supports 24-bit LBA addressing, there are tools to restrict the size of the drive.

DISCLAIMER: I have read of Dynamic Drive Overlay (or Drive Dynamic Overlay) software, which is supposed to allow for the use of larger drives. I have not used one, so I do not know how well they work. I am sure they slow down access and, from what I have read, they do not work with Vista or Windows 7.

Hard disk failure

What exactly does the error say?

The safest thing to do is to stop powering up the hard drive. Get a new hard drive and adapter cable to pull the data off the old hard drive (secondary) and onto the new hard drive (primary) after the new hard drive has been formatted.

If you don't feel you can safely do that, you may want to seek the assistance of someone who can or a company that provides hard drive recovery services.

A hard disk failure error typically indicates the hard drive has (or is about to) fail and become useless.

I wonder if the controller board on the motherboard is bad. I'd report it to HP again and see if they can fix it for you. Obviously they switch vendors for getting hard drives.
