Question about Apple iBook G3 Mac Notebook

1 Answer

My iBook is Sad.

The computer screen went crazy with all sort of horizontal purple lines. It then shut down. Upon restarting it, I am able to hear it booting up and all but nothing shows up on the screen. It's black! What's going on?

I have the same problem. The screen suddenly have matrix effect, I don't know how to describe but it went like the screen effect in Matrix movie. Then I shut it down, after that I restarted, I heard the start up sound but the screen still blank. I tried to start up many times but still the same. Once I started it the screen appear but just show the blue screen for half an hour, so I shut it down. So, I gave up. After a day, I start it up again. Now it show everything but I can't move the mouse or trackpad cursor or use any keyboard commands. Now, I just need it to function properly just once, so I can back up my data and send it to Apple repair shop.

I would connect another monitor to it, if you see the same on the monitor, the videocard/GPU is toast, if not , the onboard display is.

Ibook display problem

You can reset the pmu this might help to stable the display, this is only used as a last resort and not a possible solution.
  1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
  2. Reset the power manager by simultaneously pressing and then releasing Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard. Do not press the fn (Function) key while using this combination of keystrokes.
  3. Wait 5 seconds.
  4. Press the Power button to restart the iBook computer.

My iBook G4 continues to run slowly and/or freeze

Try resetting the PRAM by turning on the iBook then holding option + command + P + R and wait till u hear another chime. If it still freezes, it may indicate an application may be causing it to lock up hold shift after you hear the chime to boot OS X into safe boot.

Computer won't show start up screen, only shows different colors ie. green, then pink, blue... i took out the battery and started it without the battery and got the same results.

First you need to reset the PRAM:
  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
  3. Turn on the computer.
  4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
  5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
  6. Release the keys.
Next you need to reset the PMU (power management unit). This will depend on the model of your iBook so follow the instructions on Apples page:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431#faq6

Hope this gets you going again

All the best

Ibook G 4/12.1/1.33/5aptx.....will not start

Some computer react this way when the logic board goes bad or have a defect in it.
First, Try this:
Remove the battery.  Plug back in the power cord, then press and hold down the power button til you hear a loud beep sound. then release it.  If the computer starts back up... Then you should be okay.
If not, it may has something to do with the logic board.
Let me know if the above works... We may can try some other things if not.

Stuck on the restart your computer screen.

You may have installed something in the startup items folder that your mac isn't liking.
When you turn the iBook on, press the shift key as soon as you hear the startup tone. hold it down until you see the gray apple screen. This will get you into safe mode, hopefully then you'll be able to fix whatever you did from there. If you are still at a loss, get in touch.

Blank screen upon powering up

First try resetting the PRAM - Hold Command + Option + P + R until u hear a chime.

If that doesn't work, apply firm pressure about 1 inch below the option + command and start the iBook, it takes the iBook to turn on the screen approx. 30 seconds.

Can you connect an external monitor to the Macbook? You can verify your lcd screen this way.
You may need one of these connectors:
