The information below was complied by me, it explains what causes the check engine light to come on and the process of finding the cause. When the Check Engine light (or Service Engine Soon) is turned on, the systems computer control unit (called the PCM) has sensed a fault in the electronic controls of the engine and/or the emission system. When this happens you will seldom feel the car engine run any different. There are about 200 possible faults that turn the Check Engine light on, to know what has developed a problem you must have the system tested, this is called an OBD2 fault code test, Kragen and Autozone parts stores (USA only) do this testing for free.

You know I would doubt that this is caused by a speed wristed attendant, especially if you have removed and replaced the gas cap at the correct speed and the light stays on. ..................... ha ha.
Seems to be a recurring problem and having just spent a poop load of money with 2 dealers on that SES light issue I will tell you that the 2001 2.7 V6 engines have 4 O2 sensors and 3 catalytic converters. According to both dealers as those aforementioned parts approach the 100,000 mile marker they tend to send error codes. You get the errors cleared and 50 miles later there is the SES light again. The O2 sensors seemd to be very difficult to remove, both shops indicated you are better off to buy new catalytic converters, install new O2 sensors in them and then bolt in the whole mess as a unit. This of course assumes your bad readings are O2 sensor related. I would take it to a dealer as oppsed to autozone or advance as their generic little readers pale in comparison to the code readers at the dealership. price reflects that though.

Take your rig.. drive it to a gas station.. fill the tank up with gas.. also fill 2 jugs of gasoline at the same time... put the jugs in the back of it.. now drive as far as you can until the rig runs out of gas.. then, take the two jugs of gas.. pour it all over the rig, inside and out.. now light it a-blaze, then walk to your nearest car dealer and buy a new car..

The service light means something is wrong with the car and it needs attention now. Get the codes checked and that will tell you what is wrong with it.

Try these easy things...take off clean and reconnect the battery cables, take to Auto Zone for a FREE computer hook up. More than likely if the battery hook up doesn't work it's the oxygen sensor.

Engine needs service immediatelly. If Service Engine light starts to blink, it's about to stop completely.
