Sony ICF SW55 repair

The batteries in my SW55 leaked and since then it has not worked. I opened it and cleaned all the contacts and found out that the the the ribbon cable had corroded.

Is there a way I can get this radio fixed?

Thank you

I have the same problem. Shipped it to Sony under their swap program but they didn't have one and said parts no longer existed to do a repair.

SOURCE: 13 years old Sony ICF-SW7600 not working

Sony radios of this era had notorious capacitor problems.... also several other brands were affected. These capacitors were underrated and the technology to make them was not at it's best back then. The cure is to replace the capacitors on the board with new electrolytics. About 28 of them need to be replaced but the big problem is to find someone to do this. the original capacitors are surface mount and must be removed and new radial lead caps put in their place, some are rather tough to get at and the new ones have to be placed carefully. My SONY ICF-SW7600 now works as new and maybe even better!
I have done this myself as I have skills working with surface mount capacitors. I offer my services to those who cannot find service for their radios. Please email me for details, I am not into making bucks on this, I just want to see these radios kept working and bringing enjoyment to their owners.

SOURCE: ICF 2010, no sound suddenly

If the radio does not work with headphone then the external jack for audio may have broken loose from it's soldered points. Simple re solder may make the repair. Beyond that it would have to be diagnosed by a technician.

My dc011 works on plug in not battery

Sounds like you may have left your radio in direct sunlight fot too long. first thing to check is the batterys- they could have been "cooked". A possiblelsAo also possible that the batterys sweated inside thier compartment so the contacts would need to be cleaned. for this, use cotton swabs dipped in 90 percent rubbing alcahol.

I own a sony icf sw 7600g short wave radio which worked perfectly until recently when I believe a battery may have leaked and now it is caput with nothing coming on ; dead dead ! is it fixable and can you...

When a battery leaks it leak acid which can damage or ruin everything it touches. First how extensive was the leak? Was it just a bit or did it seep onto the circuit board? You can clean the terminals. Remember your dealing with battery acid. Do it over a metal can and brush the terminals with a small wire brush. (Don't touch your eyes until your finished and have thoroughly washed your hands.) Just like you would a battery terminal. Then when down to the metal again use a regular pencil eraser to finish the cleaning. You may try a drop of flux per terminal as well after using the wire brush. If a wire was negated then soldier a new one in. You can also use a small, dry, non soap impregnated SOS pad in place of a wire brush. Install new batteries and give it a try. If no acid ruined the circuit board it is just an issue of getting the terminals to run current through them again.

No power

If your radio is powered by batteries, try changing the batteries. If your battery needs to be charged, try that too. If your radio is powered by an alternating current (AC) cable, make sure the plug is plugged into the outlet correctly and that the outlet is not deteriorated. If the outlet that you're plugging the radio into is controlled by a switch, make sure that switch is turned on. If all of that doesn't work, it may be that the batteries contacts are deteriorated or a cold solder joint is causing bad contact with the power supply.

Display disappeared but the backlight, radio, cd and everything else works great

LCD displays are often wired with a flexible ribbon cable that is applied with a specially heated tool. These often fail when the assembler (or robot) fails to apply heat long enough to bond the cable to the circuit and LCD. This is a very difficult repair for the do-it-yourselfer and even the company that warrants this radio would probably not repair it, but replace it. The cable itself is not available as a new part to consumers and repairing it involves shortening it just enough to eliminate the defective connection and 'ironing' it back on.

It is possible that the LCD isn't getting voltage because of a defective component on the PC board.

Really, all that can be done to the average person is to remove the batteries for a minute and replace them on the off-chance that it's an eprom error.

Sorry that I don't have better news.

I have a Sony icf 2010. No sound, but white noise.

AA batteries need replacing or the contacts are corroded and one more, the PC board is connected to the AA negative post by a wire that touches the pad on the PC board. Sometimes it will lose contact because of oxidation or corrosion, to fix this a wire soldered is best but just repositioning the wire will make the cure. Requires removal of the circuit boards.

Corrosion can be deeper in the radio and cause all sorts of problems from rotting copper traces to messing up the keypad. Needs to be checked by a good technician and taken apart even more for cleaning and /or repair
