Zyxel 661H Wired Router. I am successfully able to ping router from my PC, but am unable to get a connection to 'the net'. All LED's are on, showing the routers has connected to ISP. Have tried a second router and all is working ok, i.e PC to ISP connection.

Hi lafalot,

Many thanks for the reply, yes I have 'reset' the router and completed the 'setup wizard' settings, but still cannot get a connection to my ISP. I guess the router has 'thrown in the towel', hopefully it can be repaired :-)

Have you gone into the settings page to set up the router? If the second router works, then it's possible the first one is defective.

The Gateway Desktop with Visa will not connect to internet.

You can have a few different types of error. You can have a bad card, a bad cable or a bad router port. At higher levels, you can have a networking problem.

If you have another computer that does work you can swap cables between the machines and determine whether the cable is bad. You can also use the good machine to determine whether the router port is OK by connecting the good PC to the router with a good cable.

If your LAN card (or the built-in mainboard port) has status lights, they should tell you whether you have a valid good connection when you are connected to a good router port with a good cable. You determine that the router port and cable are good by using them with a working PC.

If your GT550 PC has good status lights on the LAN card and on the router port, you want to determine whether you have an IP connectivity or routing problem.

Find the properties sheet for your network connection. If it is set up to receive its address automatically it should work with the router. If it has a permanently assigned address, that has to be compatible with the router configuration. At the very least you should be able to ping the router 'ping 192.168.0.1' if the gateway address is 192.168.0.1. If your gateway is something else, use that in the ping command.

What changed last ? Is it a new router or ISP connection? Most systems work out of the box with automatic (DHCP) configuration.

Can you connect to the router's internal management server ? You would enter the IP address of the gateway into your browser address bar. If you are asked for a password, you have a working connection to the router. If you know the password, log in and poke around at various status screens to see if the router itself is connecting to the 'WAN' which is usually 'the Internet'. There will also be a lot of other information about all of the devices connected to the router.

Some routers have link tests built in to them. There will be a screen showing the link state of every connected port.

Ask for clarification when you reach a part of my answer that you don't understand.

Unable to connect to cable network after downloading network drivers

You need to be sure that your network settings are properly set. If you're behind a router, make sure that your computer is in the same network with it. Ping any website like google.com and see the result by entering this command in command prompt: ping google.com. Here is a picture showing what you should see if everything is ok.
12_18_2011_10_22_52_pm.jpg
If your result is something like "Destination host unreachable" or "request timed out" try this command: ping 173.194.66.103.If you have ping with the second command - you should fix your DNS input in Network settings. Usually for DNS server you should use the IP address of your router. If you have ping in both scenarios - you should check Internet Options of your Browser. Make sure you have entered proxy settings if you're using one. Make this initial diagnostic and write about the results so that I could help you.

Trying to connect two computers to the internet through a router (not wireless) having problems after connecting both computers to the router, only one computer has internet connection. My internet...

Initially check whether the ip address is assigned in the computer in which internet is not browsing using the command ipconfig/all for windows and ifconfig for linux. If ip is present try to ping the default gateway ip address,if ping is success there is no issue in the cable you used and also with ip address. If ip is not assigned assign ip by manually or by using dhcp of router.Enable and disable the lan card in the router so that sometimes the problem get resolved. After ip is assigned and ping with router is ok .Ensure dns servers are correct else give google public dns server 8.8.8.8.Then try to ping www.google.com in command prompt if ping is success then you can browse.

No pc connection light on netgear d834g router/modem (wired connectio)

the two reasons are
1. the cable might be damaged. if so then you cannot get the signal.
2. the light might be gone.

you can check these two errors with the following

start->run->cmd
ping <gateway's ip address> -t

if you get reply then the cable is ok and light gone.
if you don't get reply then your cable might be gone.

Cant access internet (e-mails), possible dns error, and Domain Name Server may be down. Pinged remote host but no response

Sounds like either a cable has come unplugged/broken, the router/modem is on its way out, or your DNS cache needs to be cleared.
In this order:
Unplug the modem and/or router power cords. While unplugged, make sure the cat5 cables are connected securely(if using wired net).
Wait about 30 seconds to a minute, then plug the modem and/or router back in.

Test your internet connection.

If there still no connection to the internet, Click Ctar>Run, type in cmd, hit enter. This opens the command prompt.
On the black screen, type in ipconfig/flushdns
Close the command prompt, and re-test your internet connection.

If it still fails, verify with your ISP that your internet connection is active, and try a different router and/or modem.

Iam trying to connect my laptop to the innet. i have wrt54g router.

Hi jjroyc

Let's see if we can get your laptop connected to the Internet.

First, I have some questions and a few instructions for you.

(01) Is this a new (to you) router?

(02) Do you already have one or more computers connecting successfully to the Internet using this router?

(03) If yes, are any of them connecting wirelessly?

(04) Have you recently (at another location for example) successfully connected this laptop to the Internet? If so, did you connect it "wired" or "wirelessly".

(05) Are you trying to connect your laptop to your router "wirelessly" or "wired"?

(06) If you are trying to connect the laptop wirelessly, turn off your laptop's wireless radio and connect the laptop to the router "wired" instead (using an "Ethernet Patch Cable"). Once we've established that the laptop is capable of connecting to the Internet via the simpler "wired" connection, then we'll move on to the more complex wireless connection.

(07) Please, go HERE to download the manual for your particular router. You will need to determine the version number of the WRT54G model 1st. There are instructions there that will guide you through this.
