A little more detail is needed. What is the type of computer - desktop or notebook? What operating system are you using? What are you doing when the system freezes? Does it happen intermittently or only when you are doing something specific? If you can, get all of your info off of the drive that you can. At that point, your best best would be a reformat and a total reinstall.

Windows XP freezes half way through Restore program?

Select an earler restore point. If it still doesn't work step back earlier. Somewhere in the restore date history there has to have been a date where the system worked. Remember that the restore process can take some time if a lot of material has to be restored

How do I reset my password that I forgot on my Dell Vostro 220

if you forgot the password for tyour winows log in theres no real easy way to change the password. one way is to get a password recovery tool. you have to be carefull because there is a alot of scams out here. in my experience heres the top five i suggest
  1. Stellar Phoenix Password Recovery - Simple startup utility resets a forgotten admin or users' password using a familiar Windows-like program interface instead of command-line.
  2. Password Kit - Top rated version of Passware's Password recovery app, supports Windows Vista and RAID/SCSI/SATA drives.
  3. Petter Nordahl-Hagen's Offline NT Password & Registry Editor - A great boot CD/Floppy that can reset the local administrator's password.
  4. Openwall's John the Ripper - Good boot floppy with cracking capabilities.
  5. EBCD - Emergency Boot CD - Bootable CD, intended for system recovery in the case of software or hardware faults
  6. the next step i could recommend if you do not want to do this is to try a system restore. if you have the system cds that come with the computer you can put them in and when starting up computer you should see setup or system restore in bottom right or left corner. it will say hit f12 or f2 you are going to want to go into there and boot from cd. once you boot from c you will be able to do the system restore and set computer back to factory defaults.

Restoring dimension 9150

Yvon,

It sounds as if your restore partition has become corrupted. You vcan Contact Dell and order a restore disk

As far as trying to Install from Install CD goes. Well Win XP does NOT recognize SATA drives natively. You have to install the sata drivers to get them to appear. You can download them from the link below.
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&ServiceTag=&SystemID=XPS/DIMENSION%20400/9150&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=
If you have a floppy drive, this is easy just copy to a floppy. Then during the install WinXP says something to the effect of "Press F6 to install 3rd party or RAID drivers" hit <F6> and direct it to the drivers on the floppy.

You should now be able to complete your WinXP install.
If you don't have a floppy drive post back here and we'll try to see if we can get the drivers in there another way.

Thanks
Dave

Does any one have gateway GT5220 Installation disk ?

Create an ASR Floppy Disk loadTOCNode(2, 'summary'); The following steps can create an ASR floppy disk from an ASR backup operation: 1. Format a 1.44 megabyte (MB) floppy disk and insert the disk into the floppy disk drive of the computer. 2. In System Tools, start the Backup program. When the Backup and Restore Wizard is displayed, click Next. 3. Click Restore Files and Settings, and then click Next. 4. In the What to Restore dialog box, select the media that contains the ASR backup. Ensure that the media is inserted. 5. Expand the Automated System Recovery Backup Set that corresponds to the ASR floppy disk that you want to create. 6. Expand the second instance of the drive letter that contains the system files. Expand the Windows_folder/Repair folder. 7. Click the following files from this repair folder: Asr.sif and Asrpnp.sif, and then click Next. 8. At the Completing Backup or Restore Wizard screen, click Advanced. 9. At the Where to Restore screen, set the Restore Files to: dialog box to Single Folder, and then set the Folder Name dialog box to the root of your floppy drive, for example, "A:\". 10. Click Next. The other options in this wizard are optional and do not affect the transfer of files to the floppy disk. When the wizard is finished, the files are copied to the location that you had previously specified. The ASR floppy disk is ready for use in the event of an ASR restore operation.

NOTE: The Asr.sif and Asrpnp.sif files must reside on the root of the floppy disk drive to be used during a ASR restore operation. Starting the Windows Recovery Console loadTOCNode(2, 'moreinformation'); To start the Windows Recovery Console, use one of the following methods: • Use the Windows Setup floppy disks or the Windows CD-ROM to start your computer. At the "Welcome to Setup" screen, press F10 or press 'R" to repair. After you start the Windows Recovery Console, you receive the following message: Microsoft Windows(R) Recovery Console

The Recovery Console provides system repair and recovery functionality.
Type EXIT to exit the Recovery Console and restart the computer.

1: C:\WINDOWS

Which Windows Installation would you like to log on to
(To cancel, press ENTER)? After you enter the number for the appropriate Windows installation, Windows will then prompt you to enter the Administrator account password.

Note If you use an incorrect password three times, the Windows Recovery Console closes. Also, if the Security Accounts Manager (SAM) database is missing or damaged, you cannot use the Windows Recovery Console because you cannot have correct authentication. After you enter your password and the Windows Recovery Console starts, type exit to restart the computer.

When you use Windows XP Professional, you can set group policies to enable automatic administrative logon.

Use the Winnt32.exe utility with the /cmdcons option to add the Windows Recovery Console to the Windows Startup folder. This procedure requires approximately 7 megabytes (MB) of hard disk space on the system partition to hold the Cmdcons folder and files.
