If you are sure that the USB cable is plugged in correctly, the cable is probably broken. Try replacing the USB cable with another or a new one.

How to use my Toshiba External Hard Drive. There really are no directions for how to use it.

Plug it into the usb or firewire and it will bring itself up on most computers. Kinda like a ipod if u know how to work one of those. But it has the programs to run it on the hard drive.
Or you can open it up in my computer, J drive usally. And use it like a sd card. Just grab and transfer and it makes a copy. Then you can add folders and what not to organize it.

It should bring up a small window with a searching flashlight and files being loaded. It will do this every time you turn it on or use it on another computer. And it needs to do this to activate the drive. It will take like 30 seconds to complete.

On mine anyways it has two save locations. One storage has 32 gigs and is a harder memory, is less likly to lose the information and has the programs to organise and what not the files and folders( if you choose to use it, I don't) and the instruction manuals(read me file) . The other is the rest of the memory.

Plugged in an usb to ata/atapi bridge(ext HD)

There are a couple of possiblities but first you have to try the external hard drive into another computer, if this works then you may have a problem with USB drivers or the IRQ

if the external hard drive didnt work with other computer, then it is possible that the ext hard drive does not have working partition and or a logical drive,

to check this right click you computer icon then click Manage.

On the left side select Disk Management, then you should be able to see all your harddrives even the cd rom drive from there right click and create partion for any un partitioned drive.

No Hard Drive or USB Device in Disk Management

If you are running WIN98 the USB drivers must be added for they don't come with the operating system as in later windows. (from Win Me on up)
And too, some times if you connect your devices in the front they are 1.1 instead of 2.0.
try using the ports in the rear where (if) that is where they are working for the external drives and see if the pen drive is reconised
so it will install the drivers.
Hope this does it for you, good luck, please leave a rating, thank you kindly

I have 3in1 USB 2.0 to IDE & SATA Cable but nothing to show me how to use this kit

SATA 3.5" 2.5" IDE 3 IN 1 TO USB 2.0 CABLE ADAPTOR KIT

1 external connection kit
1 internal connection kit

The internal connect kit consists of 1 red USB connector cable
and 1 internal white male molex connector to SATA female power connector
( 1 yellow wire , 2 black wires , 1 red wire )

the external connect kit
consists of a 3 pin power adaptor (with a tiny plug to save space) feeding a power supply which powers either IDE thru a Molex connector or SATA through a supplied adaptor. Supplied also are data connectors to link the IDE or SATA hard drive with a USB port. Use this adaptor set to retrieve data from a hard drive when it is not mounted in a computer.

Install a maxtor basic external hard drive

All you have to do is plug in the device into the USB Port, and connect the drives AC Adapter if neccesary. Thats all there is to it. The drive you plug in will show up as a hard drive in My Computer.
