sounds more like the video control board to me. You'll find that video drive is fundamental reason why these go 'black'

You have to use the remote - goto your convergence menu. If you can't adjust it - its broke - and needs to be fixed...

i suggest if you buy it few months ago that item is under warranty
you to call the toshiba service and try to have changed with another
one or get free service - delfo

RF Output Channel
1-Set TV to Channel 4
2-Insert a prerecoeded tape into the unit
3-Press Source until VCR light is lit
~ if noise is seen on TV screen, press (VCR/TV) on remote
4-Press play> once
5- After a few seconds, press and hold {Play>} on the unit for 3 seconds
~ The RF output channel will change to channel 4 from 3 and you will see a playback picture
~ When a picture does not appear on the TV screen, repeat step 4
6- Press (STOP) to stop plasyback

I had the same exact problem.
I removed the bulb and cleaned it. There is a small screen at the top of the bulb and it was covered with dust. Once it was cleaned I replaced the bulb and it solved the problem.

If you mean that you get a black box, with a little of the picture visible around the edges, then your closed captions are on and set to TEXT. This puts a black box on the screen about 10 seconds after changing the channel. Go into the menu and turn off the closed captions and the picture will be back to normal.
